Zambrero burrito. $10 lunch review

Burrito

Zambrero’s are a Canberra grown mexican take-away franchising success story.

The Civic store can get a bit busy at lunch with the queue heading out the door and onto Alinga St.

But if you turn up around 12 there’s no waiting and you’ll be quickly gliding along the make desk.

At $9.90 it only just squeaks in as a sub $10 lunch. But you do get quite a lot of food. If you’re feeling extravagant I recommend the guac for an extra $1.

In fact watching the food pile up prior to being wrapped one wonders “how am I going to eat all that”.

The answer is “because it’s so delicious”.

Armed with an alfoil clad baseball bat (which in a few short years has become as distinctive as a million dollar branding exercise) You’re all set to retreat to your desk.

I went with the lamb burrito with verde sauce and no jalapenos.

(If you’ve never tried Zambreros before feel free to take this template to get you through the scary first burrito.)

In many ways they’re like a kebab, only actually tasty.

If you didn’t already know about Zambrero then give it a whirl.

The meal was piss poor, we had terrible service. We had next to nothing in the meal. The girl that served us was sour and was rude. Didn’t get out money’s worth!!

I tried one of these on the weekend, from the Braddon store.

Chicken, corn salsa and the medium chilli sauce.

It turns out it I needed to ask for some flavour, too. It was quite disappointing really. I wonder if chicken is not their strong suit?

Thanks for this series of reviews. I usually bring my own lunch, but as I didn’t today I was inspired to try Zambreros. Loved it!

Ditto.

For all you Southsiders, Erindale Zambrero’s has always been very good in my experience. Quick friendly service, and well made burritos.

I’d second that: very friendly staff, quick service, always happy with a meal from there and end up stuffed full. Say what you will: burritos from Zambreros are filling, healthier than maccas and better value.

Only discovered the Woden one in December, my new lunchtime staple.
Its at the top of the bus interchange, down the stairs from Oxygen.
Perfect for boosting my fresh vegetable intake, and tasty too.

I was unimpressed with Zambrero. I can’t remember what I ordered but it was a pain to eat and left me wishing I hadn’t. I did find the wall detail that resembled swastikas amusing though.

A Mexican-style burrito? What other kind is there? That’s like saying an Australian-style Vegemite sandwich.

You can call anything you want a burrito as long as it’s wrapped in the right bread. Presumably the distinction here is between that and something that you’d actually buy in Mexico.

Yeah, but a real burrito is the traditional Mexican style. I could wrap some ice cream, chocolate and potato chips in the right bread, but it ain’t a burrito!

That’s simply an ice cream, chocolate and potato chip burrito. Not traditional ingredients, and therefore clearly not “Mexican style”, but a burrito all the same. I would call it a pizza if I put those ingredients on flat bread and baked them.

I cant believe people are bagging out Zambrero’s ! I have been to Mexico and the food was SHYTE !

All a matter of taste I guess…

I have 2 negatives for the City store – #1 lately you have to ask the staff to put beans on your burrito (automatically done elsewhere) and #2 they don’t have the citrus juice that the Braddon store does. Mmmm perfect with a burrito.

As for the person who commented about Belco being dead all the time… rock up any night around 630-7pm and the line is out the door.

They have fantastic salsa verde too. This gives their fare a really authentic taste.

I’m a big fan of Zambrero, best I’ve ever had. The strange thing is the worse burritos I’ve ever had were in Mexico. The best Mexican food is always found outside Mexico

I work at Belco where they have a Zambrerro’s which seems to be always empty. However, when I have occasion to go to Civic at lunchtime, on my way to where I am going, I stop by Zambrerro’s there for a burrito & coke. They are usually busy but the staff are friendly and I have not been disappointed with the food yet.

BTW, do Domino’s and Pizza Hut make pizzas they same as Italians do in Italy?

they need to up their game in Braddon. A shop full of people, no movement in the line except for the people who were ahead of us who just walked out empty handed, as did we after 10 minutes.

No burrito is that good.

How hard is it to make a burrito? And yet, I was left wanting. Burritos don’t have lettuce in them. They have rice and black beans. The beans also make a vegetarian burrito more filling.

Of the three nay-sayers here, you’re the only one who’s bothered to mention what’s actually wrong…and what are you complaining about? The presence of lettuce? Ask for no lettuce. The absence of rice? Every burritio I’ve had from Zambrero’s has had rice. The colour of the beans? Okay, so they don’t have black beans, they have red ones. If that’s really the biggest (only?) issue, you’ll forgive me if I’m not entirely sold on your argument.

I love ’em, personally.

Let the burrito war begin

I tend to agree with SamTSeppo. I lived in the US for a few years and loved the Mexican food (if that makes sense); even Tex-Mex was tasty. I liked how fresh the flavours tasted, and left a non-greasy feeling afterwards. Instead of buying a burger or pizza in Australia for dinner, in the US I bought a burrito from many hole-in-the-wall establishments and taquerías. It cost no more than $8 and came with endless corn chips and salsa.

When Zambrero started, I was excited, expecting the same, or something similar. How hard is it to make a burrito? And yet, I was left wanting. Burritos don’t have lettuce in them. They have rice and black beans. The beans also make a vegetarian burrito more filling.

Still, it’s better than nothing. Just a shame cos it could be so much better. The other place for Mex in Canberra is Francisco’s Mexican Cantina located inside the Manuka Village; it’s a bit pricier but I prefer to go there.

Zambreros has the worst burritos I’ve ever had, bar none. They’re passable if you’ve never had a decent one, but if you’ve ever had a Mission-style burrito in the Mission or a Mexican-style burrito at a little hole in the wall, the facts are pretty clear: Zambreros is awful.

It’s not hard, either, to make a better burrito. Zambreros just doesn’t want to. Avoid Zambreros.

Zambreros do good burritos. If you can recommend a better one in Canberra, I’m all ears.

Credibility: Zero.

There’s always one…

Perfect as a dinner you can take back to the Phoenix, too.

That said, I’m less enthusiastic after trying the equivalent Sydney chain, Guzman y Gomez — smaller servings but more flavour. We need some burrito competition in this town!

I will have to say, out all 3 stores ive been too, Manuka is the best.

Love em!!!! My girlfriend use to rave about them so she took me along, the first two times I wasn’t too impressed – I thought they were good but nothing to rave about – but now I’ve figured out my order and I’m hooked can’t recite it of the top of my head but bean burritos with guac all the way!!!

That one looks pretty poorly constructed.

The Braddon store is the original and the best if you’re in the general vicinity. Civic comes a close second.

I love Zambreros; the burritos don’t always look appetising, and they’re usually messy to eat, but they are very filling and taste awesome.

The Unique thing about Zambrero is that it tastes just as good at 1pm on a Wednesday as it does at 3am on a Sunday. The tacos are also quite tasty if you don’t think you can handle a whole burrito.
