Zara

Controversial Spanish fashion retail chain Zara is opening a store at the Canberra Centre.

We are excited to announce the much loved international fashion label Zara will be opening at Canberra Centre on Thursday 14 March.

Zara will bring their collection of stylish, high quality, well priced fashion for women, men and children to their Canberra Centre concept store on Level 1.

Anyone feel the need switch their style every week?

Fashion shouldn’t even be allowed to be considered “controversial”, it’s the most trite and trivial rubbish in the history of civilisation and typifies everything abhorrent about humankind.

I read the article as suggesting that the store itself was controversial for some reason, as opposed to the fashions contained therein.

I think both the store itself as well as the fashion itself is controversial. Zara is one of the many stores that rely on ‘fast fashion’, pumping out new lines every couple of weeks to keep the customers coming back frequently.

I read a good book about this recently: http://www.amazon.com/Overdressed-Shockingly-High-Cheap-Fashion/dp/1591844614

$8 billion in annual sales of mediocrity.

McDonalds had a total annual turnover of $27b. Lots of people buying crap doesn’t stop it from being crap.

I wandered into the Melbourne store a few weeks ago to see what all the fuss is about. To me (mid-thirties, non-fashionable male) it seemed to be aimed solely at hipsters and trendies; middle of the range quality, manufactured in China following designs that may have been fashionable some 6 months ago in Europe at a price that is above Lowes/KMART and below David Jones.

In a word, mediocre.

“Fashion is a form of ugliness so intolerable that we have to alter it every six months”- Oscar Wilde.

Yes. Sweatshop manufacturing at high-end prices enough to make one feel warm and fuzzy all over.

I had the misfortune of visiting the Sydney store a couple of weeks ago. Watching all the women pounce on the clothes reminded me of seagulls on a chip.
