Zed leaps upon Jon Stanhope's Ceausescu moment

Liberal Leader Zed Seselja (scarce believing his luck) has (with great haste by the slow moving standards of his office) seized Chief Minister Stanhope’s bizarre Ceausescu moment of complete misjudgment of his audience.

“The Government should be in the final deliberations for the budget, and Jon Stanhope is clearly sending the message to the community that he regards public art as a higher priority to the improvement of basic services like roads infrastructure, health services and education. And if you disagree you’re a ‘redneck’.

“It’s this sort of delusional and out-of-touch reaction with the significant cost-of-living pressures placed on Canberra households, that sees him continue to spout lines that the ACT is an affordable jurisdiction to buy or rent.

“The Canberra Liberals believe the number one priority of the government should be on providing improved basic services and easing the relentless cost pressures placed on Canberra households.

“You have to wonder how much longer the Labor party can stand their leader alienating the community with his bullying and abusive antics,” Zed concluded.

Wedge, sorry to tell you this but the Death Star was destroyed and the Force has abandoned you. Strong Labor fortresses are no more, pack your tom-tom, your off to Endor to live with the Ewoks, and other useless creations like Wookies, Rudd’s and Tanners, where, hopefully, you will all succumb to the predators there and be converted to Banther pudu.

At least you’ll come in handy for something then!

God I wish we had an electable opposition sometimes.

It is. Steve Pratt did not receive enough votes to return to the Assembly.

I agree 100% with Zed. Stanhope is a total idiot and I can’t wait to see him fail at the polls next election.

The only way Stanhope will not be Chief Minister after the next election is if Katy Gallagher is.

I don’t think so.

Yes, I got that from your previous post. Not much point debating it as it will be in the hands of the electorate soon enough.

First piece falls into place…

Now, I loathe Alistair Coe, and, I wish him specific harm, however, I have to give him credit as giving the appearance of being the hardest working opposition MLA.

You ‘wish him specific harm’? Always thought of you as an intelligent enough leftie, but you actually wish harm upon Alistair? What is wrong with you?

Bad day.

Really? Even Zed’s comments seem to say that’s what he believes:

How long the Labor party can stand it? What about the people of Canberra? I’d have thought Zed would be trying to whip up the masses – not hoping the Labor party does the job for him.

Zed desrves the job on a silver platter dontchaknow? All he has to do is sit and wait for the people of Canberra to realise what a talent he is and hand it to him.

He’s the laziest opposition leader I’ve ever seen in terms of policy announcements or media comment on current issues.

I’ve been watching opposition leaders across the country since 1997 and Zed is stunningly inert.

In my opinion of course.

Thanks JB.

Absolutely genuine question, why do people have the impression that Zed is not a hard worker? I’ve actually heard this opinion from someone else in the past. Obviously it’s all about perceptions, but why do some people have that perception?

Typical arrogance from a Labor supporter.

There have been occasions where Labor has become so putrid and unpopular that people here have elected Liberals, albeit voters south of the lake have taken the initiative and swamped the hard core leftists in the north.

In 1995 the Carnell government was elected, the same year Brendan Smyth won the Canberra by-election.

At this stage it looks like Labor will win the next ACT election. The Canberra Liberals under Zed simply haven’t provided an electable alternative and their carping opposition to things like gay civil unions where they simply parroted Australian Christian Lobby propaganda has hurt them greatly.

The sooner Stanhope retires the greater the chance of Labor retaining power.

Canberra Liberals seem to have forgotten that Kate Carnell was a social progressive, and that’s what people voted for.

She also worked damn hard, something Zed doesn’t seem to do.

Only when Liberal’s in. And when Labor is in the federal Gov, Liberal comes in to the ACT. I think that’s how history goes.

If the biggest fault that people can find with the ACT Government is the expenditure on public art, they will be returned again at the next election.

Hang on, is Stanhope still the Chief Minister or not? I hardly think his rant can be described as a “Ceausescu Moment” if he has survived another two days without any riots. In reality none of us find Stanhope’s comments or his continued rule that offensive; if we did, we wouldn’t be talking about his downfall or waiting for an election, we’d be putting an end to it now just as the Romanians ended Ceausescu’s rule or the Egyptians ended Mubarak’s.

The way I see it is that things must be pretty damn good for us to tolerate this kind of behaviour over a luxury like public art… and if things really are that good, maybe Stanhope’s right anyway.

Doesn’t matter particularly actually. I wouldn’t have called O’Farrells mob in NSW, or Bailleu’s lot in VIC “electable” but they got in based on sheer hatred of the ALP. Obviously given past results, change will be slower to come to pass in the ACT, but if Stanhope continues to slag off at people offering perfectly valid criticism of his policies, I reckon you might only have to wait one more term to see him knocked off his perch. Heh, just had a thought, that rant of his was almost worthy of Latham at his best!

God I wish we had an electable opposition sometimes.

I hope we won’t have to be alienated by this obnoxious, arrogant buffoon past the next election. How dare he refer to me as a bloody redneck and philistine because I disagree with the way he’s wasting my money.

He and his mates are no better than the clowns who just got booted out in NSW, and I hope the same thing happens here at the next election.
