The Canberra Times has been given the goss that their former leader Zed Seselja is quitting the Assembly to tilt full time for the Senate having already knifed Gary Humphries for the pre-selection.

The campaign has begun!

UPDATE: Zed’s announcement is now available:

Today Zed Seselja has announced today that the date of his departure from the ACT Legislative Assembly will be Tuesday 11 June.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Canberra whom I have represented for 8½ years, and who I fought for as Opposition leader,” said Mr Seselja, “l hope to continue to represent and fight for them in the Senate.”

“I look forward to spending time out in the community talking to Canberrans about the issues that matter to them and their families.”

Mr Seselja will seek to make a valedictory speech in the Assembly on Thursday 6 June, which will be his last sitting day.

“I will take the opportunity then to thank my constituents, colleagues, and supporters more fully and to reflect upon my time in the Assembly,” concluded Mr Seselja.

Over the coming months, Mr Seselja will be dividing his time between consulting with Canberra firm Landscape Research+Communications and campaigning for the September 14 election.

Landscape are all but unknown to Google but some digging finds a page for them.

Landscape Research+Communications is a new Canberra-based firm offering social and market research with a strategic communications focus.

Landscape Director Jane Seaborn has more than 20 years’ experience working with public and private sector organisations to develop pathways for better understanding, planning and execution of their internal and external communications.

Landscape Research+Communications won’t just tell you what your target audience thinks, we’ll tell you why, and how you can use that to achieve your business or organisational goals.

Anyone know anything about Jane Seaborn?

Further Update: LinkedIn has Jane Seaborn working for Canberra Airport and Liberal polling outfit Crosby Textor as well as being a director of Canberra Grammar.

Intriguing.

….wrong thread post….

Well that is clearly not where is was supposed to go…

I have certainly heard of this and similar challenged. Pretty much any regular destination of young people in cars will sooner or later result in a “how quick have you done it” conversation – followed by bragging, lies and attempts to beat PBs. Mostly amongst my friends this translated to WRC action on various dirt roads to nearby camping destinations.

Lunch in Braidwood without being gone so long the boss complains used to be one though. Could be done ridiculously fast by those with turbo 4WDs, but not so quick I could believe to the coast in 45mins.

“And when the selling prices for Canberra properties, shall we say “ease back” as a result of several thousand less jobs in this town, the already fanciful land valuations will barely pause, and just as likely continue their miraculous and inexorable rise, but it’s all OK because the changes to the rates system are not just changes they’re “reforms” – so they must be unequivocally good.” (Post 18)

Yep.
And with the gubmint having sole control over the rate of land release for development, you get the picture that valuations will continue their inexorable rise into fairyland.

Actually, everyones rates are likely to triple in somewhere between 8 and 12 years, if the bracket creep effects of the new rates system are not adjusted for by the gubmint, and land values go up at the same compound rate of increase as they have over the last 12 years.

Can you see the Gubmint adjusting for bracket creep in the new rates system given their deep seated budgetary problems? Dont hold your breath waiting.

Not a Zed supporter, but his statement is likely to end up correct.
Looking forward to Barr eating his words that rates will not triple within 50 years.

I have no idea who “Canberra firm Landscape Research+Communications” are, but is Zed really going to do work for them, or is this an under the carpet way of someone supporting his election by giving him a wage with he is and unemployed bum campaigning? Kind of like giving footie players jobs they never turn up for to circumvent salary caps?

Note the careful wording that he’s ‘consulting with’ Landscape.

Jane’s a sole-trader, and her ABN is the one used for Landscape, the business registered with the ACT Registrar in 2010, but the ABN goes way back to 2000 so not sure there’s anything nefarious.

About time he ‘officially’ steps back. Though he obviously checked out mentally some time ago.

Would be pretty embarrassing for him if he didn’t win the seat… where to next?

I think a Zorro theme would be just the thing for the campaign.

I’d prefer a “Why not Zedberg?” theme…

lol, I love it 😀 Though I do think even Zoidberg is a less offensive person than Zed.

That’s a particularly poor website for a communications outfit, start up or not. It looks like it escaped from a holding pen at blogspot.

+1

He’s taking a consultancy job while campaigning? Zed is either desperate for money (which may also explain his reluctance to leave the Assembly) OR taking it very much as a given that he will be elected come September (given that we are 4 months out and most new candidates would be working on their campaign full time).

Sometimes when you’re doing a jigsaw puzzle and you’re struggling to get any pieces to fit, then suddenly everything just slots together…
That.

Don’t forget to take your iron lung and your bible with you when you leave the assembly, Zed.

Now that Captain ZZZ is departing the Assembly, I wonder when we’ll find out who will replace him. My understanding is that a countback would put Val Jeffrey next in line, but I’ve heard he might not be too interested any more. Which would mean we’d get Nicole Lawder, who I reckon will be fantastic.

Yes, the low altitude flyer has left the building! Calls for some http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GwjfUFyY6M

Just a pity he’s still hanging around ACT politics and is quite likely to become a Senator. Even more a pity, that the competition for Humphries seat is one between a low altitude flyer, and a someone from a party that can’t count who’s a fake Canberran.

You just failed to see the little asterisk which would have lead you to the small detail of “over a 20 year period”.
