Has Zed seen a road he didn’t want to duplicate?

ACT Opposition Leader Zed Seselja and ACT Shadow Transport Services Minister Alistair Coe announced today that if elected, the Canberra Liberals will duplicate Athllon Drive between Sulwood Drive and Drakeford Drive. Mr Seselja said Tuggeranong has been severely neglected by the ACT Labor Government and this is one part of the Canberra Liberals’ overall plan to rejuvenate the area.

“Duplicating Athllon Drive is part of our $700 million plan to fix Canberra’s roads and comes on top of our promise to duplicate Horse Park Drive for Gungahlin residents,” Mr Seselja said.

“This is basic planning and it’s something that Canberrans expect from their local government.

I understand the need for the duplication, and agree that it’s long overdue, but surely the ACT government (and I really don’t care which side of politics) can ensure that the duration of any works is vastly reduced. In Sydney they’re always doing night works – why can’t we have that in Canberra?
The works on Cotter road between Streeton Drive and the Parkway have been going on for a really long time – can’t they just employ a night shift as well as the day shift and get the work done in half the time?

They do work at night but it deosnt make it faster. I have to travel to Sydney quite often. Its been a long time since Ive been into Sydney without seeing at least one lane closed somewhere. Might as well work during the day if the lane stays closed anyway.

To answer some of my critics here, my disappointment with roadworks is that they all seem to be done at the same time – largely because they have ignored the state of the roads for so long and suddenly realised that they now need to be upgraded to accommodate the larger volumes of traffic.

Telling me that you plan to hold me up for another 6 to 12 months, after holding me up for the last 3 years due to your lack of action just pisses me off more. The roads in Sydney may be expensive to drive on but at least they build them when they are needed.

And what the hell is wrong with having an opinion on things and questioning what someone else says? Or should I just switch off my brain and vote with the rest of the sheeple? I for one have still not made up my mind, so whatever any of the parties puts out there needs to be convincing.

I would rap my son over the knuckles for bad conjugation of verbs…there’s no excuse.

You obviously haven’t driven in Sydney in the last 50 years. If I pick the wrong time of day it can take me almost as long to get from inner Sydney to its outskirts as it takes from there to Canberra.

Yes I have as like most people in Canberra I have run away from another city, (and country in my case). I didn’t say they worked or were value for money, just that they get built when they are generally needed.

Vote Tolls for Canberra!

Hopefully this duplication will mean they decide to put a bus stop in along there somewhere giving all the people who live nearby direct access to the Blue Rapid series buses. Unfortunately there is currently no stop between Greenway and Torrens.

It’s about time, long overdue and ridiculous omission given it’s duplicated at both ends.

Madam Cholet said :

Quite frankly I’ve just about had it with roadworks.

Fine, get off the roads then. Catch the bus.

I do take the bus twice a week actually. Funny though, I always assumed that the buses I take drive ON THE ROADS. Do you know of ones that fly?

Airbus.

With a name like Madame Cholet, I always asumed she lived in a terraced house in Dickson, where she picked pears from her sun-ripened orchard whilst wearing a polka-dot scarf in her hair and hitting small children on the knuckles with a ruler for conjugating their verbs incorrectly.

And with a name like Jethro, I always assumed you lived on a farm and whittled sticks.

Just clarifying for all those who read something weird in my previous question. I only wanted to know the guys real name. Didn’t make any derogatory comments or otherwise. Just found it odd a person would use a nickname in an election campaign.

Zed would be a hip, shortened, more appealing version of Zdenko, which one imagines he would’ve embraced from a young age.I would’ve done exactly the same thing!

Wait – they have off-road buses now? Awesome!

So will they keep the point to point on that road as well?

Duplicate to speed things up.
Point to Point to slow things down again.

What Point to Point ???

the one they are installing on Athllon Drive that has two roundabouts in the stretch.

Bit off topic but surely Zed is a nick-name and not a real name?

Are you from Cronulla? That would explain this question!

No. And what do you mean by that?

Zdenko is of Croatian descent.

I knew that – I just didn’t know what his real name was.

There has to be something better to spend our money on. Is this pork-barreling to match the Horse Park promise? I’d rather see something done about Sternberg and Ashley for example.

Ashley needs it much more than Athllon! I’ve lived around both for ages. While they are at it, do the 100m stretch between Sternberg and Ashley that desperately needs it.

Yay! More road works on many of the trips that I have to make to get to work, childcare & around town. Quite frankly I’ve just about had it with roadworks. What with the airport stuff (now finished obviously), Monaro Highway (now thankfully done), Majura Road, Anzac Parade, Edinburgh Avenue – all on my trip to work.childcare and all under some kind of construction – I’m road-worked out for a good while.

If the Libs get in we’ll get to see their prowess in the road building department. I bet they aren’t any better than the other mob.

So you would rather sit around in traffic while traffic inches forward as you get stuck in various bottle necks for the next 10 years than be slightly inconvenienced for 6 months while they work to improve the road? I don’t see the logic..

If they did it properly the roadworks shouldn’t be too intrusive. Although the intersection without a roundabout may need one.
I remember when Athllon drive didn’t exist there. I’m thinking early 80’s i was a kid in Wanniassa.

So will they keep the point to point on that road as well?

How do you propose they do it without “roadworks”?
