Zed wants a fifth judge

Zed Seselja, you might be surprised to learn, is still the ACT’s Shadow Attorney-General.

And he wants a fifth judge:

ACT Shadow Attorney-General Zed Seselja will introduce legislation this Wednesday to ensure the appointment of a fifth judge to the Supreme Court which will provide real action on the massive delays currently experienced in the ACT legal system.

“This simple change of amending the Supreme Court Act will assist the current Supreme Court judges to alleviate their heavy case load and reduce the significant delays which impact unjustly on the accused and victims, as well as civil judgements,” said Mr Seselja.

The ACT Law Society wrote to the ACT Government and Mr Seselja in April calling for the appointment of a fifth judge.

“The Government has continued to ignore calls from the legal fraternity, victim advocate community groups and the business community calling for action in regards to the significant delays,” said Mr Seselja.

It still won’t deal with a judge who can’t or won’t deliver judgments however.

..and who is in charge of the courts and their management, Simon?

Corbell is seriously starting to do my head in.Of course it’s never his fault that there doesn’t appear to be sufficient resources in the judiciary to get the job done within an appropriate time period. It’s the judges, the DPP,the poor management but never the bloody politicians.FFS can someone sort this mess out!!

Speaking of a judge who can’t(for whatever reason) or won’t deliver judgements there is this from the CT

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/backlog-of-cases-still-looms-over-refshauge-20130505-2j1qg.html

Refshauge apparently still has a backlog of 20 substantive cases that he still needs to rule on and if he doesn’t clear the backlog by the end of August it could potentially end his career.

I’m surprised Corbell hasn’t given him a Hero of the Canberra Union Award for sparing the “victims” forced to commit crimes from the fascist-capitalist sentencing process.

Given Pat O’Shane’s immunity from the sack next door in New South Wales, a jurisdiction with nonetheless more sense than ours, I’m not betting Refshauge will get the boot. But I’ll welcome it if he does.

But I thought Zed was solely concentrating on his Senate race? How can he be introducing legislation?

Oh great, crims can be let off even quicker….

Can’t see this winning him many votes in the Senate race – for that, he might be better doing a bit of entertaining wedging – mandatory sentencing(?) putting a rocket up the Stanhope Memorial Prison(??) etc. etc.

Getting cases seen faster *would* be a good thing. Next to work on the actual judgements handed down! 🙂
I really don’t see what the resistance to this is, esp when cases take so long to be heard – and they are soo keen for more MLAs (which is a lower priority IMO).
