Zed's knee jerks for Laura Norder. Moves on assaulting an officer

Liberal leader Zed Seselja is seeking out safe ground and legislating new offences and penalties for assaulting police officers.

Now I’m not at all in favour of assaults on police. It’s almost always done by losers with such poor impulse control they’re a positive menace to society.

On the other hand how are tougher penalties here going to actually protect police. No one about to attack a police officer is a rational actor cooly weighing the penalties against whatever gain can be had from the attack.

If we’re going to legislate penalties for being an arsehole what other avenues could be profitably explored?

A bit like the “female iron man” competition I saw at a surf carnival a few years back.

They’re not being arse-holes as such, but how about confiscation of bikes of riders over 35 wearing lycra? (Tougher penalties to apply to men?)

Lycra Control Units to scour the bike-paths with beach towels and baggy shorts in case of emergencies.

Desperate “Look! A shiny thing!” move to distract attention from other matters?

Tougher penalties for assaulting police officers will only hurt people who get mouthy when pulled over for speeding, or RBT. Any time a new law is suggested, it should be the priority of the assembly to determine ways in which the law could be abused to restrict personal freedom, abuse the power of the legislature, judiciary or police, or simply achieve an outcome contrary to the intended benefit. I imagine that a rise is prosecutions and gaol sentences for people telling the young lady Policeman that, “you are pretty and could I have your number” might end in more people feeling I’ll will towards the police, leading to more physical assaults.

The law of unintended consequences, Zed. You need to learn it.

It’s got nothing to do with being mouthy at an RBT station or flirtatious towards “the young lady Policeman” it’s about assaulting Police, causing actual harm to Police, but I see your point, you just need to broaden it a bit more to fit it into the actual article that has been posted.
