Zed's people sending his post bills hither and yon

There’s a highly curious story in the Canberra Times about a $20,000 post bill rung up by Senator Zed Seselja that some un-named flunkey has been repeatedly trying to offload without success:

But the bill failed to reach the Canberra Liberals’ ACT division headquarters until last month, despite repeated requests by Australia Post and the Legislative Assembly for the Liberals’ correct account details.

Instead it was charged twice more to taxpayer-funded accounts, including to Mr Humphries, who later lost his seat to Mr Seselja in a bitter preselection battle. It is unclear how the charges came to be lodged with the former senator last October and then, again, with the Legislative Assembly in July this year.

I particularly like Vicki Dunne’s bang up job of finding nothing to be concerned about.

my apologies Ian Hagen worked for Brendan Smyth no Tio

What you need to understand are the interconnections between the various Liberal players. Tio Faulkner worked consecutively for Brendan Smyth, Zed Seselja and Vicki Dunne and now works for Jeremy Hanson. Tio, while he was working as an Assembly staffer, in his role as Canberra Liberals President signed a number of Liberal declarations of debt which are now being investigated by Elections ACT. And Tio, Zed, Jeremy, Alistair Coe and a range of Assembly staffers, and Peter Collins (see below) are all members of the Canberra Liberals’ Management Committee which has responsibility for managing the party’s affairs. And Jeremy’s chief of staff Ian Hagan is the official media contact for Canberra Liberals’ Elections ACT matters, although Jeremy himself will no longer comment to the media on these very issues. Work that one out.

New Party President Peter Collins says the Party has new personnel to ensure the failures of the past don’t occur again. But, excuse me, wasn’t he the chair of the Party’s Finance Committee during this whole unsavoury period? And of course Tio and Coe were leading the Zed for Senate campaign from within the Management Committee. And this was at the same time as the $20,000 bill was being shunted off to the taxpayer. And quite conveniently Vicki was defending, in response to questions from Brendan Smyth, the whole $20,000 shebang in an Assembly Committee yesterday. And, the $20,000 bill was discussed at Management Committee on a number of occasions while some of the mates mentioned above were present. Presumably no one knew how to retrieve it from the taxpayers’ intray.

Adjacent to the whole party mess is Party General Secretary David Miles Connolly, who seems to exist in his role quite independently of the Party’s financial shenanigans.

And, for some light relief, Tio is still listed on the Canberra Liberals’ website as authorising officer and is still the Canberra Liberals’ Registered Officer for Elections ACT.

This is corporate governance collapse 101.
