Elections ACT have pronounced the timetable for replacing Zed Seselja in the Legislative Assembly after serving for a very short time as the Member for Brindabella:

Legislative Assembly vacancies are filled by conducting a ‘count-back’ of those ballot papers that elected the vacating member. In effect, those electors who voted for Mr Seselja determine his replacement.

“To begin the count-back process, an advertisement will appear on Friday 14 June 2013 in the Canberra Times inviting candidates who unsuccessfully stood in the Brindabella electorate to contest the vacancy. Where practicable the Commission will also notify all those unsuccessful candidates directly,” Mr Green said.

Those candidates then have ten days to indicate if they wish to contest the vacancy.

“At 12.30 pm on Monday 24 June 2013 the names of the candidates contesting the vacancy will be officially declared. A computer counting program will then be used to determine which candidate will be elected to the Assembly to replace Mr Seselja,” Mr Green said.

It is expected that the official declaration of the result will take place the following Wednesday, 26 June 2013, at 3.00 pm.

Conventional wisdom is that Val Jeffery’s going to get up as he’s saying he wants the seat.

Dickey Knee must be looking for a new gig – and he’d probably be 100% more effective than Zzzzzzzzzzed.

I’m calling it for Nicole.

Maybe not, with many in Tuggeranong apparently perceiving the London Circuit Soviety thusly:

Yes, but that’s Tuggeranong.

That’s how Andrew Barr started his political career.

Conventional wisdom may say Val Jeffrey, but a quick look at the distribution of Zed’s preferences shows that Nicole Lawder with 1048 got slightly more than Val did with 1024. Not much a margin to be sure and the further preference flow is too hard to calculate as Brendan Smyth got most of Zed’s preferences – the on-flow from him can’t be calculated on the published table as Lawder is elimated from the count by the time his preferences are distributed.

Of course, if Lawder doesn’t re-contest, Jeffrey will win.

I admire Val’s advocacy (even if I vehemently don’t agree with 25-50% of what he says) but I’m yet to be convinced he can hold a parliamentary party’s line. He’d be better positioned as a community whip to force the government to fix things like the hospital system (not holding my breath, Katy), stop any future school closures or bemoaning things like traffic congestion and public transportation.

Nonetheless, he seems far more honest and less sly than half of the menagerie currently inhabiting the Assembly. And maybe that’s the problem. Politics is a dirty game, far dirtier than even the Hyperdome toilets, the glorious expanse of which Val will be representing if he succeeds Zed.
