The Canberra Times informs us that Zhang Long, awaiting trial in China for murdering his girlfriend Zhang Hong Jie, aka Steffi, in Belconnen back in 2004, will not have to face the death penalty if found guilty.

This opens the door for the ACT to co-operate in his trial making a conviction more likely. The Chinese with their more direct approach to justice (or at least retribution) have been keeping Zhang Long in prison anyway.

I wonder when Action will get one of these

I would not bet on Zhang living a long life even with assurances of no death penalty. A visit to one of those black buses and they will have him recycled for body parts before anyone can say foo.

I believe they had some mealy-mouthed excuse for why it didn’t contravene the letter of the policy.

(penalty even)

I thought it was fed gubt policy not to assist death penatly prosecutions. So did the AFP really dob in the bali 9 to indonesia?

I am confused by this whole thing.
– Australia opposes the death penalty so we wound’t give evidence against Zhang.
– AFP dob in Bali 9 to Indonesia, knowing full well this would put them up for the death penalty.
Or is the Zhang thing just Stanhope’s personal crusade, rather than a Federal govt initiative?

Well I’ll have to check my records to be sure, but no, probably not.

meh, everything worked.

i didn’t ask you to fix a post that was attacking you did i?

What was that you were saying about incompetent hyperlinking again jb…?
