Zombies at ANU

And no, we’re not talking about Friday morning classes…

Woroni informs us that good old assassin games are being updated with a trendy zombie pallour:

Humans vs Zombies works a lot like a game of gang-up tag – except it is played over a week. All players start the game as humans and one is chosen to be the initial zombie. All players wear bandannas (on their heads if they are zombies or on their arms if they are humans) and go to university as normal. If a zombie tags a human that human will become a zombie and will be able to tag more humans.

Lecture halls, laboratories, libraries etc. are off limits for the game, but the areas in between are not. Humans aim to outlast the growing zombie hordes and can defend themselves by stunning zombies with socks, balls or by shooting foam nerf blaster darts at them.

So, are zombies still cool? Or just a bit five minutes ago?

Belated thanks Jim Jones for the advice.
The Toronto Film Festival reference rings a bell, so I must have been talking about the new Romero in the first place.
Diary of the Dead must have escaped my attention altogether or else I’ve seen the cover and mistook it for being “a making of” doco, which I’d already seen.
Thanks Toriness, I will check out “True Blood”.
I wonder if it will match my all time faves; one I think called The Vampire Lovers, starring Ingrid Pitt, which to this day is one of the most erotic movies I’ve ever seen and Andy Warhol’s Dracula with the “wirgins” and Little Joe.
I was stunned by that camel report too, Mr Evil.
I thought, this is a financial news show, WTF do you care about except money?
The lady making the allegations and outing K Rudd’s image came across as a wild-eyed loony and I had no idea that financial news could be so entertaining.

Nah. Zombies vs Humans originated in the states, so they can’t say squat 😛

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo – this will only give further ammo to some loudmouth outraged Yankee ‘journalist’ to accuse Australians of more genocide.

First Camels, now Zombies – who/what next???

Unless the rat patrol moves in first.

That’s okay, I don;t take up much room… And I’m sure a few bike chains and cogs used as throwing stars would make short work of the undead.

I’m sure we could work out some more impressive items, McGeyver / A Team style.

Apart from Let The Right One In, vampire stories have turned into lame tweenage romances and I believe zombies will rule the horror genre for sometime to come yet.
George A Romero was way ahead of his time in 1968 with the original Night of The Living Dead with its doco-style and negro lead role and I’ve never seen consumerism skewered better than in the original Dawn of the Dead.
Fair dinkum, I still feel like I’m in that movie every time I visit a shopping mall.
Day of the Dead and Land of the Dead were disappointing in comparison with the first two but still had plenty of good ideas in them.
And of course there’s been innumerable other z movies in their wake, some of them excellent ie Shaun of the Dead and 28 Days Later.
The buzz about Romero’s next zombie film is solid with its combination of living dead and high tech communications.
I believe the genre has dominated over recent years because they suit the times with their riffs upon the theme that the enemy is us.

you might want to check out ‘true blood’ – book series and now tv series.

Are Diary of the Dead and The Zombie Diaries readily available in Australia?
When’s Survival of the Dead due for release?

If you want to buy, use ebay – it’s cheaper and more reliable than any retail outlet I’ve seen.

Hiring is iffy, I’ve seen Zombie Strippers around the traps, along with Quick and the Undead, and one rogue copy of Diary of the Dead, but no copies of the Zombie Diaries.

Survival of the Dead is set to debut at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, 2009 (or so says wikipedia).

PS
I forgot to say “And the hero figure was wrong in his decision making.”
I also forgot to thank Jim and Ozhair for their information,
I’m not exactly sure which Romero movie I was referring to ‘cos I have an embarrassingly bad habit of hoarding newspapers and magazines and then reading them months and even years later.

And can I be a zombie in your movie, Ozhair?
I probably wouldn’t even need make-up.

I am one of those special people that refers to zombie movies, apocalypse films, and I Have No Mouth as ‘uplifting in the bad way’.
NotLD is an exercise in improper planning and execution, if only everyone had gone into the cellar, and killed Karen as soon as they saw her, things would have been so much better…
(I have a large collection also)

That’s one of the beautiful ironies of the movie. The totally obnoxious father was absolutely right despite his personality defects.

I’m afraid it’s too late. Commments indicate victim is dead inside and feasting off the living.

And I’m still slowly moving forward with my plans to film my own Zombie epic here in Canberra next year 😉

Oooh, I’m so completely in love with that. I could offer assistance in a number of areas – feel free to get in touch if you’re doing it, I’d love to help.

I’ve been on a massive zombie binge of late, picking up weird Japanese zombie stuff (Wild Zero, Versus) and old English (The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue) and Italian (at that crazy Fulci, Mattei and Lenzi stuff) zombie movies.

I’ve read way too many bad zombie books – Max Brooks is about the cream of the crop, but there’s some absolute dross out there.

Get yourself a copy of the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks… It’s a cracking read and cetainly turns a few heads sitting on the coffee table at my place.

Or Brooks’ follow-up, “World War Z”. Classic 🙂

And Jim, I wasn’t too fussed with Zombie Diaries, I thought it and Diary of the Dead were about on par, for different reasons. (Another person with a large Zombie DVD collection here 😉 )

However, I think Pelican may have been refering to the upcoming “Survival of the Dead” from Romero 🙂

When the day of the zombies arrives just remember the password and your welcome at my rural compound.

You’re a bit late there, ‘Diary of the Dead’ was released ages ago … and was a big steaming pile of crap. Much better was the small independent British movie ‘The Zombie Diaries’ that came out around just before ‘Diary of the Dead’.

I have an embarrassingly large collection of zombie movies on DVD.

And Granny said, “Let there be fun!” and there was fun. Magnificent orange zombie fun!

Let them enjoy it. Plenty of time later for being grown up and boring.

I’d suggest that if you want to get the message across, it probably isn’t such a great idea to simultaneously implicitly admit you’re studying arts and then pull the I R SO SERIOSE AND MATURE COMPARED TO THEE thing.

Personally I’m a lot more comfortable with people running around playing zombie than the way a lot of ANU students act come Thursday nights.

This explains why my work’s out of brains.
or nurf guns even!

If only the Zombie holocaust actually did happen. I would be in my element.

Woody Mann-Caruso3:34 pm 05 Aug 09

(Is saying ‘all the rage’ still all the rage? I’ll have to ask Cory Doctorow…)

Woody Mann-Caruso3:33 pm 05 Aug 09

Pfft – zombies. If the blogozeitgeist is anything to go by then steampunk, ukelele-playing ninja-pirates are all the rage.

Jivrashia = meh.

I’m sure there’s a place and time for such activities… like pre-school.

Zombies are still cool! I’m jealous.

What happened to Assassin we played when I was at ANU. You just got a copy of your target’s student card and a water pistol to shoot them with. After you made a ‘kill’ you would then go after your target’s target and so on until only one person was left. Nowhere was off limits. Some people took that game way too seriously.
