Justice and Community Safety are warning that a new background checking scheme is coming into force:
The Commissioner for Fair Trading, Brett Phillips, is reminding employees and volunteers who provide regulated services to children that, while the scheme begins on 8 November 2012, they have 12 months to register, until 7 November 2013.
“Everyone has the right to be safe in their own community and the new background checking scheme is a significant step in the right direction,” said Mr Phillips.
“The registration of people who work with, or are planning to work with, children in certain regulated activities and services is the first stage of a six year registration program. Regulated activities and services for children include people working in schools, child care services and justice facilities.”
In years two to six of the program, all employees and volunteers engaging in regulated activities and services to vulnerable people will be required to register.
“Vulnerable people are children under the age of 18 years and adults who are disadvantaged and access a regulated activity in relation to the disadvantage,” Mr Phillips said.
