Police find woman with stab wounds, missing teeth in Civic hotel

A woman was allegedly attacked with a hammer and repeatedly stabbed in a Civic hotel on the weekend.

Police officers arrived at a hotel in Canberra City at around 4 am on Sunday (4 August) after learning a woman was in the reception area with serious injuries.

This woman alleged a man had assaulted her, stabbed her multiple times and hit her on the head with a hammer.

She also alleged he locked her in a hotel room and she couldn’t leave.

The officers saw she had injuries that included missing teeth and stab wounds, as well as significant bruising and bleeding.

Police went to the hotel room and arrested a 31-year-old man after a short negotiation. He is also accused of damaging the furniture and walls at the hotel.

He appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court via a phone from the Canberra Hospital in a bedside hearing on Monday (5 August).

“[The man’s name], can you wake up please,” a police officer could be heard asking him when the matter was called.

Chief Magistrate Lorraine Walker told the man that as he would not make a bail application that day, the matter would be adjourned to another date.

“Sweet as,” he replied.

He was handed charges of intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm, unlawful confinement and damaging property.

No pleas were entered, and he was remanded in custody to face court on 27 August.

Region has decided not to name the man as his connection to the woman was not stated in court.
