One would think that if you were being cremated, what with being dead and all, you’d want nothing more but the cheapest possible enclosure that preserved decency.

Sure the undertakers would prefer you order a silk lined mahogany box. Especially as they can get the silver handles off before you burn and sell them to the next grieving family coming through the door. But why on earth were we legally forbidden from taking the cheap option and leaving more money for our estate?
In any event the ABC reports that the legal impediment to cardboard coffins has been removed and now the Norwood Crematorium is the only thing holding up the practice.
