Canberra FC stormed to a 7-0 victory over Tuggeranong United at Deakin Stadium to continue their excellent start to the campaign. The hosts ultimately won with some comfort but were made to battle in the first half by their visitors before upping the tempo and proving their lethal touch in front of goal. Canberra FC got off to a flying start when Ryan Keir steered a Daniel Bennett cross into the roof of the net in only the 4th minute but Tuggeranong regrouped well and defended expertly whilst offering a threat on the break. But, after Domenic Giampaolo made it 2-0 three minutes into the second half from the penalty spot after Bennett had been upended by Sean Kiddey, it was all one way traffic. Daniel Bennett struck twice in quick succession to increase the lead before Giampaolo swept home a superb sixth that Rowan Shepherd in the Tuggeranong goal could do nothing about. With the game secure Canberra FC could afford the luxury of introducing Philippe Bernabo-Madrid and Alex Oloriegbe from the bench and both strikers found their way onto the score sheet within the space of sixty seconds as United, opening up and still trying to play football, were caught on the counter by the pace of the league leaders. United by then were down to ten men after Kiddey was dismissed in the 72nd minute for a second bookable offence.

REPORT BY BRENDAN HAWES: A game of two halves as Woden Valley battled Canberra City to a close-knit draw. It was a level contest throughout the first half as both Woden and City attempted to assert their stance on the game. With even possession and limited attacking chances causing the momentum to swing both ways scrambled defence, lacklustre attack and a reaction save from Woden number one Jason Denham lead to player frustration. Woden midfielder Regan Walsh was an integral part, taking two close free kicks and receiving a yellow card for a rough challenge on the halfway line. Each team had decent chances on the counter, but a wayward last pass and poor shot on goal kept both teams scoreless at halftime. Woden shot out of the blocks after the break earning an early corner after quick attacking play. A nifty one – two lead to a shot from captain John Gibson, landing straight in the mitts of City keeper, James Ward. It proved to be a necessary save as in the next minute, City player Alan Gaston was shown a second yellow for a handball in the box, forcing City to ten men. Though surviving instant attack from Woden, City dug in their heels and dragged themselves back into the contest, as the game soothed to an even keel. Each side sharing attacking play before an 86th minute, outside the box strike from Regan Walsh surged Woden into the lead. The two teams played out the remaining minutes until City substitute Gimale Essacu scored a stylish equaliser in the 90th minute. The game ending shortly afterwards in a 1-1 deadlock.

Belconnen United remains unbeaten and clear at the top of the National Premier Leagues: Capital Football table, albeit having played a game more than their rivals, after surviving a scare against newcomers FFA COE at McKellar Park eventually triumphing 3-2. It was a sluggish performance from the Blue Devils, missing the suspended Taylor Beaton and the absent Dustin Wells and George Timotheou, forcing a reshuffle for Head Coach Dean Ugrinic. And it looked a bit patchy in parts from the home team who were made to work by an FFA COE team that oozed pace and confidence following their recent pre-season tour of Italy. The youngsters, all new to the AIS this term, took the lead before the break when Daniel Maskin struck their first goal of the season but their joy was short-lived as Goran Mukevski brought Belconnen level just four minutes later meaning the scores were deadlocked at half-time. The strength and experience of Belconnen came more to the fore in the second half but they needed an unlikely source to pop up and put them in control of the match. Jack Blackley is by no means a regular goalscorer but he found his touch twice in the space of fourteen minutes to put Belconnen 3-1 up and looking good for the points. A late goal from Kye Rowles made for a nervy ending but Belconnen held on to claim the win.

A hat-trick from midfielder Robbie Deeley helped Canberra Olympic to a 6-1 victory over Monaro Panthers at O’Connor Enclosed as last year’s Grand Final winners made it two wins from two at the start of the season. Olympic had to come from behind to win the fixture however as the Panthers started strongly and a stunning free-kick from Thomas James, his third goal of the season, belted into the top corner, had the visitors in front on seven minutes. It was a short lived lead though as Olympic hit back straight away as Deeley cracked in his first goal of the afternoon. Soon the hosts were in front as Mark Shields slotted home a goal that gave Olympic a 2-1 half-time lead. The Panthers continued to press after the break but Olympic was devastating on the counter-attack utilising pace and power to tear into the Monaro back-line. Shields notched his second following good approach work by Marc O’Neill, the forward showing tremendous strength to hold off two attempted challenges to net from inside the area before Nick Bobolas thumped home a bullet header to seal the points. The late dismissal of Panthers’ substitute Matur Dong left plenty of space for the home team to exploit and Deeley duly took advantage, grabbing his second with a diving header and completing his treble with a neatly taken third just before the final whistle.
