Canberra has been selected for a three-day premier ceramics event that will bring national and international luminaries and cutting-edge ceramicists to the capital from across Australia and around the world, including from Canada, France, India, Taiwan, United Kingdom and United States.
It is the second time the ACT will host The Australian Ceramics Triennale, to be held 9 to 11 July. The ACT previously hosted the event in the 1980s. Stepping Up will see the city flooded with 35 exhibitions held in various locations showcasing the ceramics and celebrating the Triennale coming to Canberra.
Stepping Up will also host a one day Market Place on Sunday 12 July, from 11am to 4pm, with more than 30 ceramicists presenting their work. Dedicated entirely to high-end ceramics, the Market Place will be held at the National Gallery of Australia, in the Gandel Hall. This is a rare chance for Canberrans and visitors to the ACT to speak with and buy directly from big-name ceramicists, including Janet DeBoos, DeMaine Pottery, Mollie Bosworth and Sandra Bowkett. Some of the exhibitors have never before had their work presented in the ACT.
The 2015 Triennale attracts leading national and international industry leaders, ceramics practitioners, educators, collectors, critics and cultural theorists who will engage with the Canberra community through exciting and diverse programs and cultural approaches. The prestigious event brings the ceramics community together, in part to expand the skills and extend the horizons of individual artists.
For delegates, there will be three days of conference presentations—keynote talks, panel discussions, artist presentations, master classes, exhibitions and more. Stepping Up is managed by Craft ACT in partnership with the Australian National University, Strathnairn Arts Association, The Australian Ceramics Association and the Canberra Potters’ Society. The National Gallery of Australia is partnering on the one-day Market Place and will offer two free guided tours of the Australian Decorative Arts, at 12 and 2pm.
This is the 14th Triennale. The last one was held in Adelaide in 2012, and before that in Sydney in 2009.
