Let’s go to the bar and grab a bouquet.
In a previous life, I was the editor of a Sydney-based craft magazine. So it is no surprise that I was enamoured with the Canberra-grown Hooray! Magazine, a magazine all about creating your own perfect celebrations. Hooray! Magazine has continued to be regular reading, even after I moved on from the craft magazine.
When I heard that the team behind Hooray! Magazine, originally the Milkshake Collective now Oh Hello! Co., had opened The Floral Society, I couldn’t help but be intrigued.
In simplest terms, The Floral Society is an online florist. It is more than that though; while you are able to buy individual types of flowers, you can also purchase a floral subscription. The subscription will provide you with seasonal, florist-designed bouquets on a regular frequency (weekly, fortnightly or monthly).
Oh Hello! Co. knows the way to find clients, and its evangelical fans, is through real life events – they successfully did this with Hooray! Magazine and the StyleSesh styling workshops; it was a no-brainer to do the same with The Floral Society.
I had yet to go to one of their workshops, when only five months after launching the online marketplace a bricks and-mortar store opens up in Kingston, aptly named The Flower Bar.
The idea is simple: just like a bar mixing a drink, select your floral ingredients and watch the in-store florist turn it into a beautiful bouquet.
I dropped by The Flower Bar at about midday on Friday. It was eerily quiet. I can’t decide if that’s because Green Square in Kingston is quiet on a Friday, or if The Flower Bar’s TGIF event from 4pm-6pm on Friday is when the action happens. (Check facebook to confirm TGIF events.)
I was the only one in the bar; I was greet by two lovely staff who walked me through the three step process: pick your size (small $33, medium $55, large $77), select your feature flower(s) from the range at the front, and add some greenery from the available range. The florist then leads you back to the bar where you can take a seat and watch her arrange the pieces together. The presentation of your bouquet is second-to-none.
As much as I love getting oriental lilies from the markets, there is something special and unique about this experience. Each time you go to The Flower Bar you will walk away with a bouquet created just for you. So, treat yourself and pull up a seat at the bar.
The Flower Bar is open Monday to Friday 8.30am–3pm and Saturday to Sunday 10am–3pm. You can find the shop at Shop 2, 48-50 Jardine Street, Greensquare, Kingston.
