Who are the successful business owners in Canberra? It would be hard to name them all, and coming from a new book penned by Suzanne Kiraly, entitled, “Canberra Business Success Stories”, indications are that there are plenty. They are the “quiet achievers” out there, who are contributing to our local economy and helping to change the image of Canberra as strictly a public service and political capital, to a thriving commercial capital.

“The term ‘success’ is a nebulous one,” says Kiraly, “as it appears to be very different for different people. Certainly, in the context of interviewing over sixty business owners for this book, it became apparent to me that this indeed was the case.”

The Canberra Business Success Stories project is designed to showcase successful businesses – success being simply defined as those enterprises which have been operating in the capital for more than ten years – and there are fifty-seven (very personal) stories in this new book.

The stories are divided into categories (products, services and experiences), and also featured are a special selection of what she calls, “the movers and shakers — businesses that are looking good so far, but have been operating for less than ten years.

“I wanted the real, human stories behind the businesses, to see what made them tick and to see if there were common traits,” Suzanne said “and I certainly didn’t want the PR story – you know … the one that says ‘look at us – aren’t we great?’, because we get plenty of that in the advertising world already and no one wants to read that. I certainly don’t!”

Early reviews are glowing:

“Suzanne Kiraly’s book pushes beyond Canberra’s traditional political and public sector image by providing insight into some of Canberra’s most successful businesses. The stories are told with honesty and passion for our city. Congratulations to Suzanne for such a wonderful book – it’s a true celebration of the strength, diversity and contribution that Canberra businesses make to the life of our city.”
– Senator Katy Gallagher

The book (full-colour paperback version), which is 448 pages, can be purchased online at http://www.canberrabusinesssuccessstories.com
