One of the Canberra region’s favourite family-owned wineries, Shaw Vineyard Estate in Murrumbateman reopened its restaurant earlier this year under new management and with a new name – ‘Olleyville at Shaw Vineyard Estate’.
Situated in-between Canberra and Yass on the Barton Highway, we recently took the scenic road to pop into Olleyville, which takes its name from the historic mid-19th-century wool producing property that was taken over by the Shaw family and turned into a vineyard nineteen years ago.
The restaurant, which shares the building currently with the Shaw Vineyard cellar door, has been given an initial small refurbishment and a second stage full refurbishment is scheduled for when the cellar door moves into its separate custom built premises, which is scheduled for completion in early 2018.
Graeme Shaw, the owner of Shaw Vineyard Estate, explains; “It’s fantastic to have on board a restaurateur with the history and resources of Create Events (who have previously catered to the Australian War Memorial, Australian Museum, Powerhouse Museum and Sydney Observatory) to take the restaurant to another level. We are looking forward to providing a great dining experience for locals and tourists alike that we hope will help to create a new destination venue for the region.”
Currently, Olleyville has two great spaces; the outdoor deck (perfect for soaking up the sun, taking in the crisp country air and enjoying a bottle of white wine) and the indoor space (which has a roaring fire and comfortable couches, ideal for sharing a glass – or two! – of red wine). The tables are set with brown paper, and there is a supply of coloured pencils at the ready for the little (and big) kids to indulge in some drawing or, in our case, a robust round of hangman.
Group Executive Chef Keith Jones has devised a new menu, offering rustic dishes dominated by a wood-fired oven that produces meals ideal for sharing, including a range of pizzas and Free Range Wood Fired Chicken or Baked Whole Baby Cone Bay Barramundi. As you would expect from a restaurant located in a vineyard, each dish has a suggested Shaw Vineyard Estate wine to enjoy with it.
For our lunch, we opted to share the selection of local charcuterie and pickles for a light entree and then indulged in some hearty mains; Lamb Shank Sheppard’s Pie and the Scotch Fillet with French Fries.
Olleyville is open from Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner (and weekends for breakfast). They also offer bar snacks, cheese and wine boards, high tea and special events.
In celebration of the festive season, Olleyville will be hosting a Christmas lunch on Christmas day 12 pm – 4 pm, offering a tantalising three-course meal including Sydney Rock oysters, Woodfired smoked bacon wrapped turkey breast, Pistachio pavlova, Christmas pudding, and much much more! To be enjoyed with a glass of Shaw Vineyard’s finest.
Tickets are priced at $110 for adults and $50 for children, book here.
