A visit from the Prime Minister of New Zealand will see traffic delays and disruptions in Canberra.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is set to visit Canberra for the annual Australia-New Zealand Leaders’ Meeting this week, arriving on Thursday evening (15 August).

Discussion will focus on modernising the economic relationship and strengthening the alliance between the two countries, as well as broader security concerns and how best to support other Pacific nations.

ACT Policing said traffic disruptions would occur around Canberra Airport and in the Parliamentary Triangle from 8 pm on Thursday evening.

Motorcade movements will occur in the parliamentary precinct (extending to Yarralumla) and then towards the Canberra Airport on Friday (16 August).

ACT Policing recommends that people travelling to Canberra Airport on Thursday evening or Friday afternoon leave extra time for their flights and also allow some time for potential delays.

Drivers who find themselves delayed by traffic are reminded to obey directions from police. If stopped, they should not break road rules (including crossing verges, paths or median strips).

The disruptions come hours before the closure of roads in the inner city from Friday evening to allow for the next step in the construction of the light rail network to Woden.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternative options – such as the Tuggeranong Parkway or the Monaro Highway to travel northbound while the works are being carried out from 8 pm on Friday to 6 am on Monday (19 August).
