Black Mountain, Pre-Tower

By johnboy 7 May 2005 6

Canberra_Unsung_Hero has sent in a truly fascinating picture (circa 1975) as part of our Images of Canberra series.

Black Mountain circa 1975

It’s a little scary to realise how Telstra-Yama has come to dominate our consciousness, and how impermanent it really is.

Have you got a picture you’d like to share with the rest of Canberra? Email it to we’re interested in pictures both in, and of, Canberra.

I’ve got a picture of the old ABC transmitter building up there before it was knocked down. I’ll send that into johnboy later on.

The answers to your questions Spectra, are as follows –
(a) The photo was taken near the entrance to the Canberra Botanical Gardens at the foot of Black Mountain in 1975. (You can see the fence surrounding the Gardens in the foreground ).

(b)The 2 antennas you can see, were the television masts for the ABC and CTC 7 (now part of the TEN network )— When the tower was finished, these 2 antennas were relocated to the top of the tower. ( The ABC and Channel 10 television transmitters are located inside the tower, but the ABC studios are located at Northbourne Avenue and in the New Parliament House. The Ten network studios are located at Watson, but not much local content comes out of there these days.
Originally, CTC 7 had their studios on top of Black Mountain, but after the tower was finished, they relocated to Watson.
Also, the original ABC transmitter building was knocked down when the TV transmitter was relocated to inside the tower.

[The “Australia in the 20th Century Group” stamp at the top of the picture is simply the name of an MSN Group I belong to].

I’m curious a couple of things:
a) Where was this taken from? There aren’t many cues as to location, and
b) What are the two red and while poles? Were they antennae that were on the mountain before The Tower was built? Forgive my ignorance, but The Tower is a year or two older than I am 🙂

Thanks for a fascinating photo – I love historical ones like this.
