Brumbies Draw Against Waikato, but play like kings

Well it’s a rare circumstance in which a draw can be described as heroic defeat, Tonight’s draw against the Waikato Chief’s falls into that unusual category.

This one-eyed fan thought the ref and touchies were worth at least 14 points to the visistors.

But far more importantly the vision and audacity with which our guys played was worthy of the hard fought title of “Brumbies Rugby”.

It won’t always come off.

But it does give me an excuse to use one of my very favourite quotes:

We were — that I will not deny — vanquished in that conflict:
yet the great intention was not lacking in nobility.
Something or other gave Him victory: to us remained
the glory of a dauntless daring.
And even if my troop fell thence vanquished,
yet to have attempted a lofty enterprise is still a trophy.

ABC Online coverage is up here (also describing the draw as defeat), RugbyHeaven’s reportage is here, Planet-Rugby ask more questions about Ben Batger here, FoxSports have a brief summary here. SA Rugby also have a rather good report up here

The Canberra Times have less forgiving coverage. They do make the point that our second halves have been particularly poor lately. Which is odd, because before Coach Fisher arrived they had been particularly good.

the biggest problem is the lack of a national competition in which to ready (and test) coaches for the bigtime.

Everyone who isn’t a Sydney club rugby blazer knows this. But the blazers rool the roost.

Put some more teams in the Tooheys New Cup and let them sink or swim I say.

Well there’s always next year. The Brumbies have dominated over the past few years, and I’m sure they’ll come back strongly.

I bet David Nucifora is having a quite chuckle to himself.

Surely the board, and chief executive must now be held accountable for the decision to get rid of him.

The Raiders had to purge a few years ago to get rid of the imbecilic Robert Finch, and Kevin Neil. I think that the Brumbies should show Rob Clarke the door. The guy is an idiot, and clearly has his head up his arse.

The Parrot wonders why the TMO wasn’t used when our Stirling Capt indicated that the try that sparked the chiefs come back was knocked forward???

Also of note was Big Melon Finegan’s barging, driving, try in his Stadium in Bruce Swansong.

A semi standing ovation followed.

It deserved a better outcome.
