Canberra’s much-loved baseball stars have introduced a new way to watch the game – in a beer garden at Narrabundah Ballpark organised by their friends at Bentspoke.
Affectionately nicknamed ‘the Cavs’, the Canberra Cavalry has built on the traditional gameday by adding an Aussie twist. Instead of sitting around during breaks in play waiting for the game to resume, fans of all ages are invited to get involved in a range of activities on and off the field.
These include fun games and competitions with prizes, mascot interactions, kids’ activities on Sundays, and even a round or two of wiffle ball.
The latest idea is a relaxed, inviting beer garden.
Bentspoke co-founder, brewer and director Richard Watkins says it’s a great opportunity to activate and engage fans along the first baseline.
“We’ve enjoyed a friendly partnership with the Canberra Cavalry for the better part of six years now, so we thought why not introduce a new family-friendly space for fans to gather in?” he says.
“The result is a chilled out beer garden. It’s close to the bar and food trucks, has plenty of seating and shade, and offers a great view of the field.
“There’s nothing quite like a baseball game in my opinion – the wild energy and dedication of the fans is unmatched. But if the crowds aren’t your thing and you’d rather kick back with a beer and a hotdog in a more casual way, the beer garden is a great alternative to the grandstands.”
Assistant general manager for the Canberra Cavalry Emilie Hall says several theme nights dot the next month, starting with the side’s first home game on Thursday, 28 November.
“Thanksgiving Night is an exclusive members event that celebrates a really fun, positive American tradition and entertains the masses with a variety of games, giveaways and special perks,” she says.
“Next up on Friday, 29 November, we have our annual USA Night, which celebrates baseball’s roots in the States. This year, we have invited special guests, including US Embassy representatives, so it’s set to be a big one.”
Saturday, 30 November, is Veterans Night. The event will include a pre-game observance ceremony, recognising and honouring the contributions of the Australian Defence Force, New Zealand Defence Force and national emergency responders with the Ode of Remembrance, Last Post and Reveille. Military personnel will be given free entry to the game.
Japan Night is on Friday, 6 December, when the team will celebrate its sponsors, as well as highlight its connection with the Yokohama BayStars with special jerseys, performances and cultural festivities.
Finally, the team invites fans to celebrate ‘CavsMas’ right before Christmas rolls around.
“To celebrate the holiday season, we have a four-game series, with a doubleheader from the 19th to the 21st of December,” Emilie says.
“It’s a perfect opportunity to enjoy one last family activity before escaping to the coast, or as a way to kick off your holiday festivities in Canberra.
“We’ll have a bunch of different activities for everyone to enjoy and, of course, some awesome Cavs baseball to cheer for. We hope to see familiar faces and new fans there to celebrate!”
The Cavs will play their first home round of the 2024/25 season at Narrabundah Ballpark from 28 November to 1 December. Check out the season schedule and grab your tickets online at Canberra Cavalry.
