Founded in 1976, St Francis Xavier College (SFX) in Florey celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year. From its humble beginnings as a drab grey building in the middle of a sheep paddock, SFX has evolved into a vibrant and innovative community. The green, brown and yellow 1970’s classroom decor is long gone, replaced with open, spacious and bright learning areas equipped with the latest teaching technologies and resources.

To mark this significant landmark in time, the College is planning a huge 40th-anniversary celebration on Saturday 4 November. SFX will host two events. SFX FEST (11 am – 4 pm) is a fun festival with live performances open to all. Later that day from 6:30 pm the College will host a Cocktail Catch-up evening for members of the community who have a special connection to SFX such as former students and staff.

The College community is starting to get excited about the up-coming celebrations. College Captain Emma Montgomery says SFX FEST will be like a massive high school reunion – with a difference.

“It’s different and it’s massive – because we’re inviting every current and former student and their parents, every current and former teacher and other staff members plus everyone else in the local community who’s ever had a connection to the school,” says College Captain Emma Montgomery.

“That’s like forty years’ worth of high school reunions together on the same day celebrating some of the finest and funniest folk to ever come out of the school,”

“This family-friendly festival is a rare chance to catch up with old friends and teachers and kick back and enjoy a huge range of entertainment from home-grown bands like Signs and Symbols and Repeat Offenders, art and sports activities like tree weaving and vortex throwing, a jumping castle for the littlies, awesome face painting, pop-up food stalls, school tours and much, much more,” says College Captain Eoin Garton.

“It will be a great way for the alumni and the local community to get together, bond and celebrate SFX and the way it’s helped us live the truth, lead with courage and learn for life,” says College Captain Emma Montgomery.

SFX FEST, to be held on Saturday 4 November 11 am – 4 pm, is open to everyone and will be of particular interest to members of the community with a past or present connection to the school.

In the evening, from 6.30 pm, the College will host a Cocktail Catch-up at Ainslie Football and Social Club. Former students and staff are invited to come along for drinks, canapés, entertainment, and to meet and mingle with old friends.

“SFX or Frannies, as it is often affectionately referred to, is a special place. We have a number of staff members who attended the College as students. We also have several students whose parents were students here. There is a real sense of community at Frannies which we want to celebrate with a fun day out and an evening mingle,” says teacher Beth Doherty.

Tickets for both events are available from Eventbrite. For more information phone 02 6258 1055 or email school.office@sfx.act.edu.au or visit www.sfx.act.edu.au
