Annual festivals, community events, better streetscapes and more public art are part of a new plan developed by the City Renewal Authority to revitalise the Dickson Group Centre and make the village area more people-focused.
With Dickson’s population set to grow with the light rail-driven redevelopment of the Northbourne Avenue corridor, the Authority has collaborated with the community to devise the Dickson Place Plan, which it says builds on the area’s existing character.
The plan includes 29 recommended actions ranging from short-term temporary improvements to larger, permanent changes that aim to create improved and safer public places.
It proposes the creation of a Dickson-specific grants program and a trial project to upgrade the public spaces along Woolley Street, as well as a temporary park within the Dickson village area with hang-out spaces, skate facilities, games and play spaces.
Other proposals include better lighting, the establishment of a community garden and a dog walking area at Sullivans Creek, and a permanent youth space and skate park.
City Renewal Authority chief executive Malcolm Snow said the short, medium and long-term actions in the plan were a road-map to help strengthen and improve Dickson’s identity as the area continued to evolve and grow.
“Dickson already has a strong identity and we want to make the centre an even more enjoyable and exciting place to be,” Mr Snow said.
He said implementing the actions in the plan would require cooperation between government, the community and the private sector.
“Some of the actions in the place plan are for government to undertake but others will be delivered by the community or the private sector,” Mr Snow said.
He said the plan was a living document and some of the proposed actions might change and adapt as Dickson evolved.
Central to the process has been the creation of a community-based body to guide the plan – the MyDickson Town Team.
“The City Renewal Authority looks forward to working alongside these dedicated community members to help Dickson reach its potential,” Mr Snow said.
