Double Bass teachers? Or, experienced players?

Hi Everyone,

My girlfriend looking to learn the Double Bass. She’s been interested in it for years, but never got around to it… and being uni students, our money and time was largely spent on textbooks and lectures. We’ve been keeping an eye out for a teacher during the last six months we’ve been in Canberra — we’ve contacted various music schools, yellow pages, online searches etc, but had no success.

So I’m turning to the RiotAct for your wisdom and advice:

Does anyone know any Double Bass teachers in Canberra? Or, relatively experienced Canberran players who are looking for a bit of extra cash? She hasn’t played an instrument since primary school (we all did our stint with the recorder, right?) so would need to learn the basics — how to hold the instrument, how to read music, time signatures, fingering, standard rhythms & chord progressions, etc. I’ve played the piano for the best part of my life, but don’t have any illusions about that helping too much! We don’t currently own a bass so someone who could accommodate that for a couple of lessons would be great, though I imagine we’d get hold of one pretty quickly once a teacher was found. She’s more interested in modern/jazz style than classical. Being willing to give lessons outside work hours is a must; we’re on the northside, but willing to travel.

Anyone interested, or know someone who might be?

There’s often ANU School of Music students who teach, it’s a good place to start the search.
If Steve Skurka is still in Canberra, he’s a great bass teacher.

Awesome, I’ll pass those details onto her. Thanks for the direction, Fox and Jim; and for your anecdotal opinion, Lulu.

Your girlfriend should find her own teacher if she really wants to learn. The worst music students I’ve ever had ahve been women whose boyfriends have bought their instruments and/or paid for their lessons because they once made a half assed comment about wishing they could play.

You wanna talk to James Luke: 0419 293 497 (ex-School of Music, jazz – a truly inspired player and a great teacher). If he can’t do it, he’ll certainly know who can.

A colleague of mine is heavily involved in the Canberra jazz scene and has recommended that you get in touch with Eric Ajaye at the ANU School of Music.

He’s the bass lecturer at the jazz school of music and knows “anyone and everyone” who plays and/or teaches bass in Canberra, and he may be able to suggest someone for you.
