Liberal Senator Gary Humphries has gone stark raving mad and is calling for Canberra to host the G20 Summit in 2014.

Months after the announcement that Australia would host the summit of world leaders, plans for Australia’s hosting are proceeding with no explicit role for the national capital coming into consideration from the Labor Government.

Canberra looks to again miss out on an opportunity to prove its title as Australia’s capital city.

“This is an opportunity that this city deserves, and I’m confident that Canberra is the best placed Australian city to host the summit,” Senator Humphries said today.

“It wasn’t so long ago that the then Labor Opposition condemned the Howard Government as ‘not having done enough to ensure Canberra would host CHOGM’, but now the chance has arisen for a Labor Government to put its money where its mouth is, and showcase Canberra for the G20.

“If Canberra was capable of hosting a meeting of 50-odd heads of government in 2000, it should certainly be able to host a meeting of 20 leaders in 2014.

With the global economy having gone through such dramatic changes recently, the world’s eyes will be on future G20 summits.

“This is Canberra’s chance to shine.

What’s wrong with this picture?

Well does Canberra have 20 hotels capable of hosting a world leader and their entourage? More like 5. If the bottom five countries of the G20 want to have a get together we’re sorted.

Does Canberra want to be dealing with 20 motorcades?

Comparing the G20 to CHOGM is like comparing the Olympics to a Scout Jamboree.

I don’t know what Senator Humphries is taking this morning but it would be nice if he got into the Christmas spirit and shared it.

Should Canberra host the G20 summit?

Any accomodation overflow could easily be handled right here in Queanbeyan The Top Pub has heaps of rooms.

Nooo, these are special people, needing a really classy joint.

So we could put them up at the Golden Age Motor Inn. It has air conditioning and everything!

Perhaps they could get a deal at the Central Cafe.

Its not a matter of of some sort of Obaminator striding the halls with a plasma rifle.

The possibilities for a movie far exceed the possibility of us holding the G20….

Let’s go for it. We’ve already been through the security ropes of having the Queen, Obama and Princess Mary. Let’s continue to put Canberra on the map.

Actually, the security would be much cheaper if they just insisted that the heads of state all stay in their own embassies. Or better yet, all in the same hotel. Surely the Haytt has twenty rooms? The other members of the delegations don’t need luxury or security, they can just book in at whatever motor in or caravan park has space.

The problem is they need security from each other, and the embassies just don’t have the space for this kind of thing I think you’ll find.

The embassies can’t scrape up a single spare room for their head if state?

Obviously you are right, although sometimes I think that if they all lightened up a little things would be a lot simpler. Do we really thing that Obama is going to walk ’round the hotel killing other presidents? ‘Cause that would make an interesting movie plot.

You may have oversimplified the security aspect. Its not a matter of of some sort of Obaminator striding the halls with a plasma rifle. Plus the logistics of having the staff of 20 or so Heads of State scattered around Canberra and trying to get them to meetings would be very painful. Why do it all if we are going to be amateur about it?

G20?

Would we see the serious rioting of, say, London?

Do we have the police strength and training to deal with this?

I doubt it.

Apart from the other obvious issues.

Silly idea I’m afraid.

Don’t worry about the Feds they train all the time. I ran into them training the other day, it scared the sh** out of me. I went for a fang on my ZX14r MB the other day and I was just cruising around central, thought I’d ride around the circle at New Parliament house to see if there were any protests or hot Swedish tourist chicks – I came around the corner just past the guards booth and there were approx 10 AFP cops on their motorbikes with a drill sergeant at their flank, they had their lights on and the backs of the bikes were diagonally to the curb ready to launch. Here I am, stereotype of the lone speedlimit smasher coming around the corner, they all turned their heads to look at me and a little bit of wee came out. All I could do was try to act cool and timidly wave. LOL. They train all right.

Given the chance any head of state’s intelligence service might try to play silly buggers with another’s mobile phone though (to use but one example springing to mind).

I agree it would be nice if world leaders were able to bunk down in billets like a visiting group of rotarians.

But that’s not the world we live in.

20 heads of state are going to need a big city with a big infrastructure.

It’s not as if this meeting is habitually held in national capitals anyway.

Pittsburgh? No. Toronto? No. Cannes? No. Los Cabos? No.

Looking at the list there seems to be a definite trend away from holding it in capital cities.

And if Ottawa wasn’t up to it then we shouldn’t get silly about it.

Don’t let reality get in the way of a good old-fashioned bit of grandstanding…

But the sort of people who would vote for Gary are not the sort of people who would make the logic leap to “where the hell would they all stay?” are they?

He knows that, and VicePope: therein lies the answer to your question.

Its just a case of being seen to “do something”. Champion of Canberra strikes again etc. Probably started his speech with “When oh when will….”

It’ll be fine; let’s just billet them.

Apparently our other local members are also vaguely supportive without thought as to who is going to build 16 odd four star hotels in Canberra by 2014.

Will Gary also pay for the damage caused by riots in the ACT?

Ugh, no thanks.

Though it would make for plenty of amusing riotact stories to read…

Senator Humphries … out of his depth in a puddle of dried spit. Why do the Libs keep nominating this drone, and why do people vote for him? No need for the G20 to be in a national capital and other Australian cities can probably do it as well or better.

Nah, you’re ignoring political wheeling and dealing. It makes a lot of sense to make a doomed bid for something like this now, so that when the next junket comes along he already has established himself as an annoyance needing to be silenced. Increases the likelihood in future of a bone being thrown to Canberra to shut him up. And let’s face it, what we *want* is something too small for Sydney and Melbourne to care, so the fact that we’ll only get a token event is actually a good thing.

My oath, rampant security theatre and shennanigans.. and our lack of proper hotels would bite us in the arse. Hyatt, Realm and, ummmmm? Sydney’s welcome to it.

Gary seems to have forgotten this year’s visits by Obama and the Queen .. plenty of chances there for Canberra to get its shine on and make some international headlines.

Leave the G20 delegation to Sydney, where it would go relatively unnoticed amongst the perpetual bottleneck traffic and overbooked hotels ..
