Foxsports have the slightly surprising news that “our” Giants have managed a win at Manuka Oval over the Gold Coast Suns (admittedly another expansion side).

Greater Western Sydney secured their historic first AFL victory on Saturday, downing Gold Coast Suns after kicking five goals to none in a blistering final quarter at Canberra’s Manuka Oval.

In a closely fought battle, the match was in the balance entering the final term, with the Suns just four points ahead 9.11 (65) to 8.13 (61).

Noticed Sheedy giving an interview on Seven News where he said the team did it for the people of western Sydney. Said it all really.

Yeah I saw that and couldn’t help but laugh. I went to the game against the Footscray the other week for a laugh and was not disappointed. The power of marketing is amazing and disgusting at the same time – the sea of people decked out in the orange with little or no idea about the sport itself cheering for the umpires was bemusing to say the least.

I imagine yesterdays game would have been even more hilarious.

Huh, are you suggesting people who don’t follow the ‘Australian game’ were vast numbers at MO on Saturday.

Do you people need constant reminding, that there are still many ex-Vics, Sth Aussies etc and those locals who prefer our ‘National’ Football league living in the region.

The Brumbies haven’t even hit 20yo yet.

Could be worse. There’s still heaps of folks who wear red and black to the footy and have “little or no idea about the sport”, haha.

Would you prefer no game at all? Without these ‘newbies’ with little or no idea turning up the AFL or the Giants wouldn’t even bother putting on a game here.

I caught the second half on Fox this afternoon and it was a highly entertaining game. I found myself screaming at the television, particularly in the final quarter.

Maybe it’s because I tipped GWS in the office comp this week, but I thoroughly enjoyed watching the way they played.

Isnt it Greater Western Sydney?

Where does the North Canberra come from? If anything Manuka Oval is in Manuka on the South of the lake?

Well, where is GWS based? Looks like it’s north of Canberra to me.

It was a good game. The Giants made a great start and then had a poor second quarter. Even in the third it looked like the Suns were heading for a comfortable win, but GWS fought back late. Then it was all GWS in the last quarter.

The kids were so excited during the game, when they knew they had it won. The celebrations from all the players and staff afterwards were good to see. Really happy for them and the surprising number of GWS fans in the crowd.

Nice to hear Canberra get a mention in the song for the Giants’ first ever win as well.

Aside from that, go Blues!

Canberra, centre of the universe. Like Greenwich, but more so.

Good atmosphere at the ground today, lots of fans doing what they could to will the young (and not quite so young) blokes over the line when they had a sniff in the last quarter.
