Set to become an iconic gourmet landmark in Canberra, the aubergine-coloured building at the roundabout of Kembla and Gladstone streets in Fyshwick is the new home of Urban Providore. The locally owned business is spreading out in its new space with beautiful high ceilings and room to showcase the regional produce it has become synonymous with championing.

Since launching in 2013 with owner Dawn Sculthorpe Hayter at the helm, Urban Providore has been a treasure trove of high-quality gourmet foods sourced from producers in Canberra and across Australia.

With a passion and innate knack for not only procuring tasty foods but also turning them into beautiful hampers and gifts with a fun, creative spin, Dawn says food culture has always surrounded her.

Salami bouquets

Salami bouquets are a signature gourmet gift from Urban Providore.

“I am a passionate foodie, spending years in Europe and raising two magnificent sons in South Australia. I love searching for the finest quality and revealing unique artisan food treats,” she said.

“Urban Providore grew from a desire to see the fantastic artisan produce, previously only found at local markets, readily available to Canberrans and visitors to Canberra.”

Starting from a humble stall at the Old Bus Depot Markets selling salami along with handmade and styled gourmet gift baskets, the venture grew to open its first permanent retail location in 2015 on Wollongong Street in Fyshwick. The need to expand saw them move temporarily to a larger warehouse and retail operation in Gladstone Street and now to their sprawling new home at Kembla Street.

“Retaining our urban edible garden and creating an iconic aubergine building on the roundabout of Kembla and Gladstone streets allows us to stock a far greater range of artisan produce from across Australia,” Dawn said.

“We have a Hamper Studio wing where we make our famous fresh cheese and charcuterie boards and gift hampers. We are also developing the concept of vegetable artistry – starting with chilli strings and garlic braids – bringing a new creative arm to inspire Canberra foodies in their homes!”

From gourmet fudge to award-winning olive oil and their signature salami bouquets, the new Urban Providore store is a gourmand’s delight. Located at 80 Kembla Street, Fyshwick, it is open Wednesday to Friday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, and Saturday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
