How's the Snow 2008

Finally managed to get down to the snow on Sunday, after getting over various illnesses. It was a blue sky day with just enough chill to keep the snow from going slushy but not too much to make things icy. As those interested know, the beginning of the season was looking to be almost as bad as last year, but then in July it all came bucketing down. The car park at Perisher was well and truly full, but luckily that was not reflected in the number of people and length of lift queues, which were usually very short.

I had a great day and have included some photos and video for you all.

Yes, I did see the SouthCare helicopter flying around, and lots of police, ambo, and fireies running around in their tracked snow vehicles and at the time thought it was a training exercise. Unfortunately not. The bottom of Sundowner where one fellow died, had a screen around an area, and the Snow Patrol guiding people away from the location. Nothing to see when I went past some hours after the accident, for which I’m grateful.

I don’t know if the poor buggers who ran into trees were wearing helmets, or whether a helmet would have done any good, but I’d encourage anyone on the slopes to wear one, they keep your ears warm too. I’ve noticed over the last 5 years that more and more people are wearing helmets, which is great.

I’ll be back up for a few more days at the end of the month, so hopefully more white stuff falls from the sky before then to keep things as good as they are now. [ED – Slideshow below]

No Happy Valley wasn’t the big excitement, thats just the run I got the best video for. And yes that chairlift is the slowest around, takes 10 minutes to get to the top and 2 minutes to get back to the bottom. There lots of more video of me filming the chair in front and people going by underneath, but too boring to show.

Next time I’ll include the soundtrack I listen to whilst skiing with the video.

Tried to watch the video but it was loading mega slow. um I hope skiing Happy Valley wasn’t the big adventure, it’s an access lift. And a very old (and flat) and slow one to boot, but if it works PB won’t replace it anytime soon cos their brief is to make money and minimise expenditure.

Helmets are useless. If you hit something slow, they’ll only protect your head. If you hit somehting hard, they’ll protect nothing. Ski in control, it’s that easy, it’s that simple. Olympic skiiers go faster than any of us ever will, and guess what? They’re in control, even when they crash they’re (usually) still in some measure of control.

Hitting stuff in skiing is like hitting stuff when driving, except on skis, you have more control that you do when driving. Yes, really.

Wow, that was really cool!!
*boom boom*

Be boarding the 5am bus down there in the next few days I think.

I’ll back the helmet warning Che.
Always wear one (have since my rockclimbing days) and it has saved my scone several times.

One classic was catching a downhill edge on my board leading to a major face plant during which my board (with feet still attached obviously) came all the way over and whacked me in the back of the helmet – yes the body does bend that far (thanks to plenty of yoga). Hate to think of what that steel edge would have done to my head without the lid on…
