A major personal injury compensation firm isn’t considering a class action into reported food poisoning cases from the Turkish Pide House in Macquarie.

A spokesperson with Slater and Gordon Lawyers said they weren’t investigating this course of action “at this time”.

“However, people who have been affected may be entitled to compensation, particularly for pain and suffering, if they were struck down by food poisoning,” they said.

The firm has investigated potential legal action for previous Canberra food poisoning incidents, such as the 224 people who became sick after eating at Mrs Kim’s Donuts in late 2021.

Slater and Gordon public liability and medical law practice leader Liam Casey has previously explained people who have been struck down by sickness after eating at food establishments may be eligible for compensation.

“If they suffered salmonella poisoning and have incurred any out-of-pocket expenses such as medical bills and loss of income, for example, they should seek legal advice regarding whether a personal injury claim can be pursued,” he said.

People would need to prove they have a viable case, such as providing a receipt of purchase at the time of a food poisoning outbreak, as well as bank statements showing out-of-pocket expenses.

The Turkish Pide House in Macquarie closed on 12 October after ACT Health discovered multiple breaches of the Food Act 2001.

Inspectors visited after receiving reports that 22 people across six separate groups had become ill after eating at the establishment around 9 October.

The restaurant has to pass another inspection by ACT Health before it can reopen.

It’s marked online as “temporarily closed”.

Sad news. Horrible for those who had food poisoning and hard to accept given that place is a local institution. Fingers crossed for everyone.
