Violence in a Church sporting competition is not something that immediately leaps to mind and most violence associated with soccer is off the pitch but NowUC gives us an insight to what organisers hope will be a one off occurrence.

An on field scuffle during a match between the Hope and Community (H&C) and Navigators in the Canberra Church League game held on the last weekend in July lead to the game being called off and two players receiving life bans. The incident; H&C player intentionally stomped on the face of an opponent and continued with the assault after getting a red card. To cap things off the victim then when off, retrieved a hammer and came back to settle the score.

Recent sermons containing too much eye for an eye stuff and not enough love and forgiveness perhaps?

I’ve played a few random games for a couple of teams in the church league. I played in this team of South American guys 2 years ago and apparently one game when I wasn’t there our keeper head butted an opposition played when they were shaking hands at the end.

aaah Religion, the cause of all world conflicts

rugby players and spectators once the game is over are too busy swiling beer to give a f**k about a fight. thats what 3am at mooseheads is for.

Because in rugby the players are too busy beating taxi drivers and sexually harrasing women?

maybe our friend with the hammer got the bible confused with Mr Kings book Misery?

“turn the other cheek” is now “go fetch the hammer”

What ever happened to “turn the other cheek”?

The funny thing is, I knew a guy from a church that participated in a Canberra soccer league (possibly the same one?), and according to him the team was composed almost entirely of people not from the aforementioned church. That’s not to say that this wasn’t church people, just that you can’t assume it…. Although apparently, when the priest at the time joined in on the soccer was when they heard the worst language on the field :).. which conversely goes to show they’re all just people anyway.

It’s all ok, they’ll just use religion to ask for
‘forgiveness’ so they can justify the darker side of human behavior and all will be well.
