Pig Out is a new short dance work developed with mostly younger dancers (aged 9-19) in QL2’s programs, working with professional choreographers and assisted by some of the older dancers who were involved in My Sister, My Brother in July. Choreographers Marko Panzic and Zoe Ventoura with Artistic Director Ruth Osborne and Assistant Director Vivienne Rogis have worked with these young dancers to create a 45 minute dance work about food and eating. Its an entry point for dancers to work and develop with QL2, in preparation to joining the Centre’s Quantum Leap youth dance ensemble. It provides an introduction to working with a choreographer — beyond just “learning the steps”.
Quantum Leap has produced some of the most exciting and innovative work that a young performer could be involved in, and helped young people along the path to becoming professional dance artists. But it also introduces young dancers to the process of creating new full-length dance works – the process of choreography. This is much more than just “putting steps to music” or “telling a story” – it includes thinking about concepts and emotions, creating new movement with improvisation and exercises, selecting and refining the most effective movement ideas, and of course rehearsing till it all flows.
Be there on Saturday or Sunday and maybe see the next generation of dance artists in Canberra!
And you can see what Marko Panzic creates when he’s got more than 2 minutes….
