A woman has an important message for anyone with bikes, prams or kids in the Gungahlin area after she made a disturbing discovery while out on a walk.
“Just wanted to let people … know that someone is putting screws with duct tape and cardboard next to/on paths pointy side up,” she wrote to the Canberra Notice Board Group after she claimed she “nearly stepped on one” on Kate Crace Street.
The photo showed a small but thick screw punched through a piece of cardboard and taped in place, and left on the ground, pointy side up.
“I’ve picked up the ones I saw and let the police know,” the woman wrote.
The comments labelled whoever was responsible “absolutely disgusting” and “terrible”.
“What is wrong with people? Why has our society gone to such a level that some people aren’t happy unless they inflict pain and suffering on others to make themselves feel good?” one read.
“So evil. Children could be badly hurt,” said another.
One claimed to have “just had tyres replaced because of this”.
“But obviously, the tape and cardboard were gone when we noticed.”
Under the condition she remains anonymous, the woman, who lives nearby, later told Region she had ventured slightly off the footpath and “felt something nick the side of my boot”.
“Then I noticed five more in a straight line along the side of the footpath,” she said.
Coming across a couple of police officers at the Gungahlin Marketplace, she gave them the spike creations and told them where they were from, and “they said they’d go and have a look”.
A spokesperson told Region that ACT Policing “is aware of the incident and is looking into the matter”.
