Psst, want a smoke with that?

By ThatUniStudent - 8 April 2011 45

For all you hard core smokers out there who want a ciggie with your meal in Canberra you still can! Want to eat some food with your cigarette? Want a welcoming environment where the management will ignore those annoying non smokers? Want to be able to tell those annoying anti smokers to F off? Well, now you can!

Come to ANU and grab a table outside of the restaurant on the upper level near the Manning Clarke Centre. Not only will you get food service to your table, but you can smoke there and management will do nothing about it. Even when people raise it with the staff three times nothing will be done about it. No smoking signs? Not at these tables. Yes, you can see them at tables closer to the restaurant, but not these ones.

No ashtrays? No worries! You can dump your buts on the ground and leave your cigarette packets on the table. They’ll still be there in the morning waiting for you.

Forgive the sarcasm, but it is beginning to get tiresome dealing with the staff of a particular restaurant at ANU who seems to have opened an unofficial Designated Outdoor Smoking Area on campus. Three times I’ve raised the issue with them and three times I’ve been told that they will do something about it. I’ve only just now realised that “something” was to ignore my complaint.

But seriously, if you do want a smoke with your meal, they will welcome you there, even if you do tell other people to F off when they tell you that it is illegal to smoke at restaurants in the ACT.

What’s Your opinion?

Yawn. So you’ve stumbled on the last refuge of smoker’s rights – think if yourself a bit like David Attenborough – you should feel priveleged to be able to view this primitive behaviour first hand.

Then, when you’ve finished feeling self-righteous, consider for a moment why your rights are more important than those of the next person’s. You’ll likely get caught-up in the rehotoric about environmental stuff being harmful to your health. Your option at that point is to go somewhere else where you might find the vocal minority continues to give a d@mn.

Then you should probably get a hair-cut and a job – clearly university isn’t lending your life much perspective.

Sweet the worst aspect of these restaurant smoking ban laws is when they are taken seriously.

I think he meant to say “whinging, whining, tree-hugging, dope-smoking, lazy, dole-bludging left”.

At least, that’s how I read it…

I read it as anyone who votes for the Greens.

to the OP call Canberra Connect and see if you can get a ranger to wander through at lunchtime, they can fine people/businesses cant they?

I actually got quite excited to check out this new venue.

You, my fickle friend will soon be retreating indoors for winter anyway – won’t you?

Only to return self-righteous again in the summer.

But I guess there’s a beautiful irony in your special kind still being able to exercise free choice.

I realise that it’s a pain to have someone puffing in your face when you’re trying to eat. And I realise the law is on your side here. But think about it from the point of view of the staff.
Waiting staff are required to be polite, take orders and carry food. Having to deal with confronting situations is not part of the job description. It’s an awkward and intimidating situation to be in. If you’re really that bothered by someone else’s behaviour, maybe YOU should do something about it. If you’re pious enough to judge people for smoking around you, at least have the decency to deal with it yourself rather than blaming the staff for not sorting it out for you.
I’m personally just happy to have the smokers outside.

This may be a stupid question, but if it is “beginning to get tiresome dealing with the staff of a particular restaurant at ANU who seems to have opened an unofficial Designated Outdoor Smoking Area on campus. Three times I’ve raised the issue with them and three times I’ve been told that they will do something about it.” why not, just go elsewhere?

You’ll never legally get the right to smoke outside restaurants again so, meh, whatever. Us non-smokers already have, and always will have, a one up on the smokers.

Have fun being hassled wherever you decide to smoke. Lulz!

I am going to go there now, with any luck they will place me next to another smoker so i dont have to listen to dolphin hugging, tree friendly, save the planet but still wear leather and use plastic, ultra right wing leftie, do as i say not as i do, progressive regressive agressive, do gooder.

If ANU are clever enough to not cut of a paying demographic, then good on them for promoting freedom.

+1.

That place will now have my business. Along with a letter of congratulations on sticking it to the half-baked, freedom sapping, “but I’m allergic” Princesses out there.

Get back to class and grow a pair ThatUniStudent.
