How will the ‘new normal’ we’re all experiencing affect Easter, one of the most treasured holiday weekends of the year?
For Siren Bar and Restaurant in Gungahlin, Easter wouldn’t be Easter without seafood and Managing Director Daniel (Dan) Gaul is doing his best to make your Easter one to remember – for all the right reasons.
Siren has introduced the ‘Good Friday Seafood Platter’ – a veritable feast of New Zealand black mussels, Tiger prawns, Merimbula oysters and a smoked salmon fillet (extras like fish and chips are also available) for just $70.
But hop to it because time is running out.

“Like others in hospitality, we had to quickly change our business model to survive and keep on as many staff as possible during this long and difficult ‘stay-home’ period,” says Dan. “It’s challenging but we’re getting there.
“A big plus for Siren is that well-known chef Darren Perryman is with us to ride the wave,” says Dan. “His food is great. Another bonus is that Siren has an off-premise liquor license with beer and wines, a great initiative of the ACT Government to give the hospitality industry an added revenue stream.”
In many ways, Siren was on the front foot when the bad news came that hospitality venues could no longer have dine-in customers.
Siren had been dishing up breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week and delivering through Deliveroo and Menulog.
“We’d been doing this for about a year, but it certainly wasn’t enough to enable us to keep all staff on,” says Dan.
To keep their doors open and staff employed, Siren has now partnered with No Biggie Meals, a new Canberra ready-to-eat food service created as a “quick-thinking response” to the hospitality industry crisis caused by COVID-19.
Customers can pre-order a weekly supply of meals by Sunday night and collect the following Wednesday from a participating venue. The five or 10 pack meals can be frozen and reheated when convenient ($10 each).
“It’s a fantastic concept and is working well. Siren distributed more than 300 meals in our second week alone which meant we could keep some staff in the kitchen, a really nice feeling after having let so many go,” says Dan.
“No Biggie is about supporting hospitality, locals and Canberrans who want to treat themselves to good tasting, healthy and affordable meals.”
In addition to the Good Friday Seafood Platter, Siren’s regular menu is always available seven days a week for takeaway, pre-order and pickup, and home delivery. (They also do a cracking bacon and egg roll with coffee for breakfast for just $10 if you’re an early riser and want to treat yourself.)
“We’re not sure how long this COVID-19 pandemic will last, but the support from the community has been overwhelmingly positive,” says Dan.
“We’re due to celebrate our 10th anniversary this June. We’ll be making some memories that night – and we hope our loyal customers, and new friends, will help us mark the occasion under better circumstances! Fingers crossed!”
