Seafood restaurant suggestions in Canberra?

My better half’s 50th approaches and is great lover of Lobster Mornay.

Sadly the expense prohibits this on a regular basis, the last one was 10 years ago so any suggestions for a fine purveyor of said lobster would be appreciated.

One that’s open on Sunday evenings but not necessarily.

As they say on the internet, plus one to Con’s Seafood.

I looked at the webiste – bugger me that place is expensive!

I have a recipe for baby koala basted in its mother’s milk.

I had lobster at Con’s Seafood last week – it was delicious. Fresh from the tank – I had one with a lemon butter sauce cooked to perfection and the other two shared a lobster mornay fresh from the tank too – we even picked our own lobsters! It is a tad on the expensive side to be honest – but as it is the ONLY place in the ACT where you can even get fresh, live lobster – I suppose they must be passing on an expense associated with that. You can get cheaper lobster on their menu too; it’s not just the live lobster they have on offer – and their ledgendary hot and cold seafood platter is fantastic (and quite a bargain)! Hope this helps!

I do hope the lobster is not cooked without being humanely killed first. Imagine having a pen of lambs and sticking them straight in the oven alive. (I’m not saying they do either here, but the way fish and crustaceans are treated is often quite horrible.)

Do you have the recipe for ‘live lambs in the oven’ and how do you stop them drowning in the fish tank?

Watched an episode of Anthony Bourdain last night where they placed a live octopus on top of a seafood steamboat so it could steam to death while they ate around it. A bit much even for a confirmed carnivore like me

Humanely dispatching is one thing, but seeing that would make me vomit on my neighbours plate.

In the great old Aussie TV series ‘The Fast Lane’, writer John Clarke (yes the man responsible for farnarkling) appeared in the final episode, in which, during a scene eating a counter meal in a pub, used the beautiful line…”The best thing about the steak here…is that it is not the fish”.

OT but how great was The Fast Lane! Ive tried to track down DVD/Videos but without any success Im afraid.

Thanks for the input folks.
Maestral is looking good, great website and great reviews on google, maybe a possible replacement for the much missed Plaka.

You should not be disappointed with maestrel. I think I been 4 or 5 times and every time has been great.

I only had bad experiences at plaka.

Thanks for the input folks.

The Twitters are saying Maestral in Weston:

For something more up to date I’d go a full whack teppanyaki banquet. Wasabi in Dickson is good fun.

Can recommend both. Sadly terrapin is gone. That place was the best in town.

Redsalt at the Casino do a seafood buffet on a Friday and Saturday night. I’ve never been myself but I’ve been told its pretty good. Not sure if they do lobster mornay though.

Cons seafood restaurant in Mawson does have Lobster Mornay on its menu. http://www.consrestaurant.com.au/Cons_Restaurant/Home.html

I have been there – about 8 years ago, and was surprised it’s still there to be honest. It’s very 70’s – but understand that’s the way it’s meant to look. From memory the food was good. Bit of an institution.

From memory, the Hyatt do a pretty good seafood buffet on sunday arvos for about $60 per head. not too sure about the mornay though
