Tasuke Bento – $10 lunch review

By johnboy - 28 January 2011 14

Tasuke bento

Next cab off the rank for the $10 lunch review is the bento box from Tasuke in the bus interchange.

It’s not the speediest of feeds, I was there for a good 10 minutes. Tasuke itself is a magical little piece of Tokyo in the middle of civic so it never hurts to visit.

Once served though, well it’s a hell of a lot of lunch for $8.50.

The dumplings with chilli jam were just mindbogglingly good, and the deep fried sushi slices something new and greatly enjoyed.

The pickled vegetables and seaweed break up the fried food nicely.

The hard part is going to be walking past and going somewhere else for the rest of this review series.

Highly recommended.

Unfortunately the Tonkotsu ramen (hot noodle soup base on pork broth – $13.50) didn’t have the depth I was anticipating. The broth was light and lacked the richness one should expect from these types of ramen. Otherwise the char siu was fine, and the noodle was al dente. The amount was somewhat lacking compared to other well known ramen establishments (Azuma in N.Sydney, Genki in Artarmon)

I’m going back one more time as the other ramens on the menu may be worth a try.

I didn’t know why they even changed to become a ramen restaurant. To cook a decent ramen, you need to learn from a pro and you need to do so for a long time. It made my image of Tasuke even worse. I live in Fukuoka at the moment (which is home to probably the best ramen in Japan) and I eat it at least once a week! So good! I’m not looking forward to coming back to CBR..

Comparing Tasuke to Iori is a bit silly. Tasuke is “Japanese fast food”, the sort of place a Japanese businessman walks into, orders, eats, and then goes back to work. Places like that are everywhere in Japanese cities, and Tasuke does it well. Iori is an actual restaurant, and your expectations should be adjusted as such.

That being said, both times I’ve been to Iori, the food took 1hr+ to come out and it was wrong anyway. They’d forgotten drink orders, brought out the wrong dishes (or forgotten basic things like the rice that goes with it!!!), and even forgotten dishes entirely. Which is made even more hilarious by the fact that we had to give them our orders several days in advance, and we even double-checked beforehand to make sure they had the right order (they didn’t!). Absolutely awful experience, never again.

I meant to say Coo, which is Iori’s sister restaurant. Coo does take away lunches such as sushi, tempura etc. I’ve been to both for dinner and they’ve been great. You must have just been unlucky. I usually get good service.

To be honest, Tasuke isn’t a very good restaurant. It sucks actually. I much prefer Iori’s 2Go4U lunches!!

Love the Tasuke!

Burma curries up the path is a good deal also.

I was _just_ looking at this place yesterday. Now I have to try it next week.

+1 agreed. It is an awesome idea to review all the $10 or less lunch places.. I love eating out for lunch, but hate paying stupid civic prices.

Daawwm those bento lunches are good. At one stage I was going there every day, I tried to order the bento special on Saturday once and the chef came out and told me off!! Ah well there is also Coo round the corner which is TOPS.

I absolutely love this place. Twice as good as Wagamama for half the price. Best bowl of ramen I’ve had this side of the pacific, and the katsu curry is great too. The gyoza is decent, but not the best. Still, A would eat again.

Never been there, but I’m going to put it on the list, for the dumplings if nothing else. I gotta admit, “deep fried sushi” just seems kinda wrong, but I’ll happily give them a try.

Thanks for the review, John. I think this series is a great idea!

Wow! Great review Johnboy, my partner and I have been meaning to try the place out since it opened (a while I know)
