Andrew Barr is celebrating The Yellow Van’s 2,000,000th meal delivery:
The celebration took place at the official launch of the service’s ‘Unwrapping Hunger’ campaign in the lead up to Christmas.
The Yellow Van has a Christmas fundraising goal of $50,000, which will help it support the most disadvantaged people in the Canberra community.
I encourage all Canberrans to get behind the campaign and donate to The Yellow Van, which will make a real difference to those people in our community who need it most this Christmas.
Each month The Yellow Van rescues over 20,000 kilograms of food, from more than 100 local cafes, restaurants and food outlets, which would otherwise be dumped as landfill, and delivers it to more than 80 shelters, refuges and charities that help disadvantage people in our community. There is no charge for the service and it operates with the assistance of volunteers.
In addition, the donated food complements the meal needs and helps lower the costs of local charities, which frees up funding for use in other areas of operations.
I congratulate The Yellow Van and Communities@Work on achieving the significant milestone of 2 million meals.
