The Brunch Run: A Bite to Eat (Chifley)

A Bite to Eat in Chifley is one of those hidden suburban gems. Fitted out with retro mismatching furniture, vintage style carpet and a big wall of photos and postcards it has an incredibly homely vibe about it.

I caught up with a friend for breakfast on Saturday morning and was actually really excited to try this cafe I’d heard so much about. A Bite to Eat is her local cafe but I was a total newbie.

Being a Saturday morning the cafe was buzzing with a range of people; couples, groups of friends, even a few families with children. It was super busy but the acoustics in here are great – I despise noisy cafes (why go out somewhere when you can’t even talk to your dining companion) but I could hear my friend perfectly during our meal and we didn’t even have to yell. A Bite to Eat wins so many points here where other Canberra cafes lose them.

The service was quick and we both ordered the Alfresco – smashed avocado on sourdough, two poached eggs, torn herbs and seeded labne. Our meals came out and I thought they looked great. There was some kind of cheese – I think it was goats cheese – underneath the labne, which was fine with me because it was delicious and really added to the meal, however it wasn’t mentioned on the menu so if you were dairy free or lactose intolerant you would have to send the meal back. The meal also had a side salad with a light dressing which wasn’t mentioned on the menu. Again, I enjoyed it and thought it added to the meal but my friend wasn’t as keen: “salad isn’t for breakfast.”

Overall, the meal was great. However, our eggs were over poached and were almost hard boiled in the middle. They were still edible and they definitely didn’t ruin the meal for me at all, however if you’re big on runny eggs you would be disappointed.

The combination of the labne, goats cheese and the avocado was delicious. A really good mix of flavours. Despite the poached egg mishap, I would definitely return to A Bite to Eat and I would probably order the same meal again.

Whoops, you’re correct. I was confusing it with dukkah!

Clarifying my clarification – confused it with dukkah because the labne came out covered in seeds and spices and whatnot.

Also, if you’re expecting labne (yoghurt cheese) in your meal, you’re probably fine with dairy.

We went there and had seriously overcooked eggs too – thought they were just having an off-day as usually I’m happy with the food there. Shame to hear someone else had the same experience 🙁

I haven’t been able to face a meal at A Bite To Eat since they plonked a communal Vegemite jar in front of me – with communal knives sticking out of it.

Not sure if you realise that labneh is strained yoghurt, so by definition it contains milk already and may actually be the cheese you are talking about?
