Weekend Cafe Hot Spot: Cafe Gaudi, Westfield Woden

By Samara Gentle - 20 September 2014 7

Time to put the south side to the test again! This time I decided to try out Cafe Gaudi which you’ll find at the Coles and Woolworths end of Westfield Woden. It’s nestled right at the front so you can sit inside or outside, the morning I came here it was way too cold to be outside so I took a seat facing the big windows.

I was served as soon as I sit down, this is a cafe with table service and they took my coffee order straight away and left me to peruse the menu for a few minutes. As soon as I set my menu down as an indication I’d finished checking the waitress came straight over to take my order – all done within 5 minutes of me sitting down, which I loved.

I noticed the offer a $10 all day breakfast and $10 lunch specials, on the special breakfast menu I noticed they had a paleo option – one egg, roasted tomato and wilted spinach. To be honest the $10 specials weren’t like the traditional specials you expect, it’s more a half serving for a cheaper price. Being pretty hungry I decided to go with a normal menu item of eggs benedict with ham.

My coffee (flat white) turned up almost immediately after ordering, which was great because I was feeling so sluggish I knew I’d be ordering two coffees in the one sitting. It’s not the best coffee I’ve ever had but it certainly isn’t the worst.

My breakfast then turned up soon after and to look at I was slightly disappointed with the $17.50 price tag. It was fairly basic, no flair of anything different. Then my pet peeve, I cut into my first bit and the ham was cold, fresh out of the fridge cold. This as you can imagine turned my eggs from hot to lukewarm and to be honest spoiled the whole dish.

While I cannot fault the service from the waitress at all, the meal really let down the whole experience. I’m positive it wouldn’t take much effort to warm the ham enough that it added to the hot breakfast rather than serving it fresh out of the fridge. With a spoiled breakfast I decided not to order a second coffee and instead finished what I could and left.

This café has been closed down for a few weeks now. Not surprising considering the lack of quality in the food. I only ate there once – the staff were very polite but the food was very much a let-down. A shame really as this is a prime area for a good café!

Rubbish cafe.

Ordered cinnamon toast for my daughter and it was toast covered in pure cinnamon, no sugar mix. Was not even edible.

i also find gaudi unsettling with the thoroughfare betwixt the dining area and the kitchen – and yes, woden is crying out for a decent eatery; this front location would be great, and better if mebbe they popped a coffee machine in the main seating space. a bit of a wasted location.

plus an ughh to cold ham in a hot dish. very poor.

I think perhaps you mean lukewarm.

I have had the misfortune of eating here a couple of times. Food is average at best and it is over-priced. Once asked for a plain ham and cheese sandwich for my then 4 year old. It was first brought out toasted, then when they brought a new untoasted one it was just bread, no butter with ham and cheese.

When I complained about it on paying, suggesting that the experience of the sandwich overall was less than positive, they made every excuse under the sun as to why I should pay full price.

You were lucky to get the service you did as any time I have been there it’s been woeful. They trade solely on the fact that it is a busy shopping centre with people who will buy coffee anywhere and who do not discriminate about the quality.

I definitely think you’re right, the only thing keeping them afloat is their location! Such a shame because the plaza could really do with a decent cafe!

Eaten there a couple of times and very underwhelmed each time. Average food, over priced with slow service.
