Before we head out for breakfast on a Saturday morning, I check Facebook to see if anyone is talking about a new breakfast spot. Facebook is handy like that.

Because we live in the city, we tend to frequent the same places so it’s really convenient to turn to social media for new suggestions. I have stumbled across so many places I never even knew existed by stalking my Facebook friends.

We were actually on our way out to Belconnen when I stumbled across the Chatterbox Espresso Bar Facebook page. Within minutes, I had the sat nav set and was giving Mike directions. It was the pictures of their breakfasts that caught my attention; plates of rostis, bacon and eggs stacked high!

Chatterbox is under what I think is a public service building, so you probably wouldn’t normally think to check it out on a weekend. I must have missed the memo though, because the café was packed!

We were seated quickly and our coffee orders were taken as we looked over the menu. I had already decided what I wanted before we even arrived – the potato stack (layered herbed potato rosti with cottage cheese topped off with poached eggs and your choice of ham or bacon, salmon or avocado and tomato).

Mike had a hard time choosing, as there were just so many wonderful sounding dishes on the menu. He ended up ordering the truffled eggs (poached free range eggs on herbed potato rosti with pecorino cheese and drizzled with truffle oil).

Our meals came out relatively quickly and the presentation made me even hungrier. We both dug in straight away. Mike loved his truffle eggs – eggs, cheese and truffles are some of his favourite foods.

My potato stack looked beautiful but was not exactly practical. I had to deconstruct it to eat it properly, but that definitely was not a deal breaker. The eggs were poached to perfection and the bacon was crispy, just as we had ordered. My only criticism would be the rosti. It was nice, but with a touch more salt and pepper and a lighter texture, it would have definitely hit the mark. But don’t get me wrong! I still really enjoyed the meal and I will be going back to check out the rest of the menu, one dish at a time.

Interestingly, Chatterbox is also a catering company and they are located at the corner of 40 Cameron Avenue, Belconnen. Breakfast is available weekdays 6:30am to 1:30pm and weekends 8:00am to 2:00pm.

i have seen a lot of check in for cafe essen for breakfast.
So, eventually went there to dig up some stuff. Smoothies were amazing !

We have been going to Chatterbox since just after it opened. Great service, good prices, amazing food – the rosti kept me coming back and I recommended the cafe to everyone. Unfortunately I think they have changed their rosti or perhaps pre make them now because they have loat all flavour. They used to be DELICIOUS, now they are nothing much at all. Disappointing, I won’t be hurrying back now.
