Weekend Cafe Hot Spot: Eightysix

Eightysix is by far my absolute favourite Canberra restaurant, so when I heard they had re-introduced a breakfast menu I was ecstatic and a little bit intrigued.

How would it work, what dishes were they going to serve? Was I going to have to share my breakfast, the most important meal of the day?

I’ve been waiting patiently for a Sunday where I would have time to brunch, so you can imagine my excitement when I realised I had nothing in my diary for the weekend.

I made the most of the sunshine and sat outside. Whilst trying to choose between eggs and French toast, I enjoyed a perfectly poured coffee. The waiter recommended I should try the scones (in fact, I believe the exact words were: “They’re F&@#ing awesome”).

To get the best of both worlds I ordered the French toast and made my boyfriend order the bacon benedict. If this was my last meal I would have died a very happy lady, but thankfully I have lived on to eat many more meals since.

The French toast with figs was really simple but so yummy. Figs are one of my favourite fruits and they really just made the dish, as did the sticky caramelly sauce drizzled on top.

The bacon benedict was also pretty delicious! And look how good that bacon is, nice and crispy.

In the end, we didn’t end up sharing our dishes because we liked our own too much! And we didn’t order the scones because we were just too full. Oh well, it just means we’ll have to go back again to try the other dishes soon.

I highly recommend Eightsix as a great weekend café hotspot for breakfast …but if you had to choose between breakfast, lunch or dinner I would tell you %100 go for lunch or dinner. The whole experience is just wonderful and the sharing plates are exceptional. I always try and sit up at the kitchen so I can watch the chefs prepping and plating up, it’s quite a beautiful thing to watch, especially if you’re a foodie like me.

Eightysix can be found at 11 Elouera Street, Braddon ACT 2612. Please note breakfast is only served on Sundays.

Call me old fashioned, but I don’t want waiters swearing when they speak to me. I believe that particular waiter is known for it and I’ve heard many people tell me they didn’t think it was appropriate. It’s very, very unprofessional.

Totally agree. Food is ok. Arrogant and patronizing service. I dined there last year and we ordered steak tartare. The waiter asked if we knew what steak tartare was (not exactly unusual). We said yes we knew exactly what it was then he proceeded to tell us anyway and then said are you sure you still want to order it.
Rest of the service was average at best.

Plenty of better restaurants in Canberra where you pay big prices for food in my opinion.

I think the waiter you’re referring to is actually the owner.

I guess it depends on your own personal preference. I have no problem with swearing, so I don’t mind at all what goes on at eightysix.

I’ve always found the service really nice too. Not patronising. Maybe I was suprised the first time I went but I can’t remember now. I go there that often I’m probably immune to it.

eightysix is my favourite restaurant too – but I prefer the dinner. I only went for breakfast once and they had a DJ. It was sooo loud my partner and I actually couldn’t head each other. It was like being in a nightclub 🙁
