Staff in my office constantly debate the pronunciation of our local coffee shop, Mocan & Green Grout. What they never debate is the quality of Mocan’s food and coffee.
Having eaten there a number of times and making hundreds of coffee runs for my bosses, I would very much agree that the quality is good and what I love most is its consistency. You always know what you are going to get.
I have however, never eaten breakfast at Mocan, so thought I would indulge and check it out for this weekend’s hot spot review.
Mocan is positioned in what I would call a wind tunnel, so I wouldn’t recommend sitting outside in the middle of winter. The wait for coffee can be a bit of a chore when the mornings are as fresh as they have been.
Make your way inside, it is definitely much more cozy in there; and by cozy, yes! It can be a tight fit when it’s busy. You can expect early mornings at Mocan to be full of regulars as it is one of the breakfast meeting spots for the local public servants.
We went in for breakfast at 8am on Wednesday and almost didn’t get a table. We were in a hurry to get to work so we ordered coffee and ordered what we thought were the two most appealing meals on the menu: smashed eggs, mushrooms, goats curd and black garlic ($16) and savoury granola avocado ($14). I thought the granola avocado sounded a little risky but the waitress assured Mike that it was delicious.
Our plates came out quicker than I had expected and were very well presented. I added a touch of salt to mine but it was otherwise delicious. I really enjoyed the smashed egg mixed through the goats curd, it was not something that I normally eat and honestly thoroughly enjoyed it. I actually enjoyed all of the components, including the black garlic.
Mike’s dish did kind of look a bowl of cereal with avocado and an egg placed on top. I’m not sure that he even realizes but the entire time he was eating, he commented that he was eating cereal with eggs. I couldn’t tell if he liked it but he did eat the whole thing and was adamant at the end of it that it was super interesting but that he loved it.
We left Mocan feeling content; we had both had really good dished and great coffee. A good breakfast experience is the best way to start the day.
Mocan & Green Grout is located at 1/19 Marcus Clarke St and is open seven days.
