burnout

Damien has sent in this shot which you’ll be pleased to know is not a live test of nuclear weaponry in the middle of the city.

Where there’s smoke…

Pic of burn-out smoke from Summernats world record burnout. Photo taken from One Tree Hill fire tower.

Look, I’ve already commented on Summernats in another thread but the fact is, it is bringing priceless publicity to this city and the region. Every interstate news bulletin has been running stories about Summernats – Channel Ten’s report on Friday ran over two minutes. This can only benefit Canberra in the long run and attract more tourists and business to the area.

I don’t recall any stories in out of town news bulletins or newspapers about the National Gallery’s Taloosa La Trek exhibition, or however you spell it.

I’m clearly the only person that thinks this is cool. Or that I’m a massive yob. Either way, awesome.

I thought it was awesome. So did my six year old son (a second year veteran now), who got to see it from right up close. It was shoulder-to-shoulder standing room where we were and he could not see from down low. A bunch of massive yobs that I have never met before in my life noticed him, and shuffled out of the way so he could see stand right up against the fence for a good view. Fortunately we had the wind behind us, unlike those poor bastards in the stands 🙂

So if the wind was blowing the other way you would happily expose your 6 year old to a lungful of tyre smoke, top work dad. Would you mind signing a disclaimer so taxpayers aren’t responsible for the medical costs of your poor decision making.

If the wind were blowing the other way we could simply have moved to the other side, genius. Nice arm waving, though.

I am not a person who would attend Summernats myself but it brings a lot of tourists to the ACT, which we need desperately. This is a good thing for our local economy. I am sick of whinging Canberrans who want everything either done for them or everything to be pure and serene. Get over yourselves, this is a once a year event for a few days.

Ahh .. Many thanks to Damien for his great pic. A wonderfull way for our new city mayor to celebrate starting the new year.
Can only hope the national papers pick up what our new green mayor allows.

And as

WarrenH

has mentioned, we canna burn any leafs ( or is it leaves ) , but some can burn tyres with his blessing.
.

But we’ve known that since the wonderful Kerry Tucker, all the Greens other than perhaps LeCouteur have, er, adjusted their core values to try to hang on for generous parliamentary superannuation and a meal ticket. Mayor Rotten Borough more like.

Why didn’t this trigger another “insadent” alert, like the one a bit further up the road at Mitchell did? Lots of toxic chemicals in that plume.

It’s not a normal activity for dead heads public servants trolls, so we don’t want clowns like Porkchop there anyway.
This has happened for 26 years people, it is not going away. Get over it and go back to hiding behind your PC down in tuggeranong….

But don’t the ‘Bogans’ of Tuggeranong support this event too? Nice stereotyping rant.

I’m clearly the only person that thinks this is cool. Or that I’m a massive yob. Either way, awesome.

The antipathy generated by this event mystifies me. Although I have never been to Summernats, and probably never will, it attracts tourists at a time of year when most residents have fled to the coast, it only goes for a couple of days, and possibly makes Canberra slightly less boring. Summernats also caters for enthusiasts who doubtless invest a great deal of time and money in pursuit of their hobby. What is wrong with that?
Plus, even for a non enthusiast, it is kinda hard to ignore the awesome in that photo !

Have I missed something or is there acually a point to burnouts that’s not obvious to a grown up?

I can see that being an annual event…..

Agree….they’ll add one extra car to the ridiculous event every year just to out-do themselves.

How Canberran.

I was heading into Mitchell when this was going off.

I don’t have enough faces to palm.

Phunny.
Harmless fun, I guess … but it’s a real dullard-fest out there. Rocket surgeons everywhere.

Hopefully the last time this ever happens.

Lets burn down the fire tower so this never happens again?

We have become a Nation of boofheads?

I’d like to burn-off the fallen leaves on my nature strip … but I take them to the green waste dump.

A Nation of boofheads.
