This is a bit of a corker that’s been pointed out to us. It’s a Ilyushin Il-76 heavy lifter (allegedly with the legendary pilot “Ivan UseTheFknLot” at the stick) making maximum use of the tarmac at Canberra Airport in 2008.

The footage appears to have been shot from the control tower and features so very amusing commentary from the shocked air controllers.

Thats awesome, who cares if its a repost 🙂

I first saw this clip on my induction to Airservices Australia which was almost 4 years ago now and yes it is from the control tower.

Any more old clips to be featured as the main story on Riot Act??

2 girls one cup maybe!!

Pearoast.
I think this is the third time I’ve seen this on RiotaCT as a featured video. 🙁

This has been around for yonks. Great video though. I think the airstrip was extended since this.

why is this the featured article if its such old news?

Yes – been around a while. I believe circa 2000, middle of summer and fully loaded with charity donations / supplies.

Maybe it wanted to visit Tralee

Well. There’s more runway now, isn’t there? COME BACK!

Awesome. (Aircraft nerd over here.)

There are a few videos of the Ruskies using the entire runway before lift off. It seems to be their speciality. See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2VlIKt6EK0 for example

The most logical reason postulated that fits with the Russian mentality is that they are paying for the full length of the runway, so they will use it!

That clip has been around for long time… WELL before 2008. Note there’s no buildings built around the airport… Brindabella Park doesn’t even exist so it’s longer than 18-24 months ago.

And yes, it was posted on The RiotACT a long time ago…

I’m sure they’re used to taking off from grass airstrips…

(I think this was posted here at the time.)
