1. The blue green algae now completely rules the lake:

The National Capital Authority has today closed the whole of Lake Burley Griffin to all primary and secondary water contact due to high concentrations of toxic blue green algae.

Last week several areas of the lake were closed, however water test results received today by the NCA indicate that algae levels are at an unacceptable level across the whole lake.

At current concentrations, it is unsafe to use the lake for any activities that involve contact with the water such as swimming, bathing, canoeing, boating and rowing.

2. And they’re turning off the fountains to appease our new blue green masters:

The Captain Cook Memorial Jet, Central Reflection Pond and Centenary of Federation Fountains are among the water features closed…

Lake water is scheduled to be tested again on Wednesday 18 February, with results available on the NCA website on Friday 20 February.

3. But hey, free concert down by the blue-green lake:

“A free concert will be held tomorrow night at the National Carillon to celebrate St Valentine’s Day.

More than 150 couples are expected to enjoy this special concert in the beautiful surrounds of Aspen Island, Kings Park.

The concert has been an annual event held on 14 February since 2002. This year’s recital will feature carillonist, Joan Chia performing a range of romantic songs from 7pm to 8pm.”

So its too dangerous for boats.
Unless you’re a rower?
Plenty of rowing boats out today.
Maybe private school types have immunity?

Pity about the water — isn’t the dragon boat challenge meant to be on this weekend?
