When I moved to Canberra, I saw a note/article/thing along the lines “…Northsiders are feckless drunks. Southsiders are sanctimonious bores…” Obviously northside gets more because they buy TAMS drinks, rather than lecture them about fairness and responsibility.

Something tells me a lot more would get reported than were genuinely missing. I think they just need to limit the trolley movements, or put a larger deposit on the trolley use. If the tokens were $20 a piece I doubt there would be many people abandoning them, and they would definitely get returned by local kids when found.

TAMS only cut the grass in Belconnen when it gets 3 to 4 feet high, Go to gunners and the grass doesn’t get to 10cm before they are cutting it again.

The street sweeper only comes around the suburbs once every 3 years if we are lucky and the gutters are left to fill up dirt and crap. Trees growing out of the storm water drains.

The road has sunken to near 100mm on side of the under pass on Alpen st been like that for over 2 years now . They fixed 1 in the area properly Baddely st. The other on Clancy st just had a repair, they resurfaced the road with the same dip again so it’s just like before it was so called repaired.

Gov/Tams don’t do sh$# for Belconnen and haven’t for a long time yet most all voted Labor still.
They clog the intersections and main thoroughfare with un timed traffic lights and speed cushions and took away most of the parking.

I don’t think there’s any link between bags and trolley dumping. If you’ve got more than two bags and you’re walking you’re probably going to use a trolley.

From (a lot of) experience, Coles is most responsive when you post a photo to Twitter and tag them with the street of the Trolley, or when you call 1800TROLLEY. They need as much detail as possible – from what I’ve seen they aren’t experts on the areas they’re looking in and struggle for anything not on a street.

Rather than going into a draw to win $1000 for the month for reporting stolen trolleys, if they gave you a puny reward [say $10], I’m sure there would be more trolleys returned to their rightful owners instead of being dumped. Even the culprits would chip in, knowing there’s an easy tenner to be made reporting their own violation.

I’m sure a number of people would have an ‘inside source’ when it came to the location of the trollies. I doubt it would last a week before there we’re no trollies left.

In the states they have trollies with electric brakes that trigger when they get too far from the store. Those would work

Trolleys used to be fairly expensive $2000 each, i think recently they’ve come down to a few hundred per pop so shops are always topping up and neglecting them.
The worst ones are the ones where people walk home 2km with the trolley then dump it.

Sadly its all because the people than the issue of trollies. Not sure how you can get someone to respect social rules when they have everything happened to them no matter what they do.

I care. I’m a Belconnen Town Centre resident and trolleys really bug me – largely for the reasons you mentioned. The rubbish is also a huge problem but I do regularly see plenty of TAMS rangers (is that what they’re called?) out and about picking up the rubbish and clearing away the bins. A few weekends ago I saw one ranger having to clean up after a party at one of the John Knight Memorial Park bbq areas – *everything* had been left behind, from bottles to meat to rubbish. Sad.

I’ve been campaigning on social media re trolleys for a few months now, and it’s getting a reasonable amount of attention – to the point that Coles put me in touch with their Trolley National Compliance Manager (yes, it’s a real position). They’re listening, and the more people that raise this as an issue, the better.

There are a lot of reasons why trolleys are a problem in the Belco Town Centre (which I detail on my blog), but I reckon it’s time we start thinking about creative solutions to either stop people taking them out of centres, or get them returning the trolleys. (There might be a similar logic re getting people to put rubbish in bins!)
