Solar in Canberra will do 4 hrs a day, wind works about 20% of the time. They do not produce necessarily when it is needed. What is needed is a decent sized battery. In OZ we use 294 Terra Watt Hours annually. To do this we have about 30 Giga Watts of power stations. Do the sums that means each of us has a responsibility for around 29 Kilo Watt Hours per day. That means 128 Kilo Watt hours for a household of 4. Rubbish you say that’s not possible. Well only 10% of power is used in private houses. So lets put a 2 Kilo Watt hour unit on the roof and get the general tax payer fund it. Really smart!

Oh batteries can anyone come up with one of about 1 Terra Watt hour capacity we will need quite a few!

Efficiency????

Bah Humbug – This has nothing to do with efficiency at all – and everything to do with awesome PR.

Believe me, if I could find a way to finance the up front cost (Perhaps through a tax deductible investment load) I will be putting the absolute maximum system in that can suck the government coffers dry!

An alternate measure of efficiency was the speed with which the pink bats ™ disappeared from the local Bunnings as soon as a rebate was available. Now Bunnings cant purchase the bats at all, cause they are going direct to installers, so they can double bill me for installing the stupid things…… Thats efficiency!

I really don’t see how rooftop solar units are more efficient than coal or hydro power plants – someone has to make the things and that takes a lot of resources, so the trade-off is pretty dubious.
