Canberra has been invited to join Major League Baseball through an offer to participate in the Australian Baseball League in 2010.
But in order to take up this incredible opportunity to join one of the world’s most prestigious and influential sporting organisations, Canberra’s baseball community needs to clear a few hurdles.
Major League Baseball, along with its partner the Australian Baseball Federation, will begin the Australian Baseball League (ABL) in 2010.
A 30 game season will run over the summer months from November until February.
The ABL will be a part of the Major League Baseball’s global structure and categorised at the AA level.
5 teams from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth are confirmed.
Canberra is the only city being invited to bid for the 6th spot. We are competing against ourselves.
The criteria for us to satisfy in order to be considered is –
· Sponsorship pledges of $100,000 per annum for three years.
· Secure support from the ACT Government to upgrade Narrabundah Baseball Park to AA standard.
· Achieve 5,000, $20 membership pledges.
We must meet this criteria by the end of September 2009 in order for Major League Baseball in New York to make a decision about our participation by October 2009.
